Systems Development
Methodologies
There exist more than just one
Systems Development Methodology
We are going to look at four of the
most interesting and widely used of
these, namely, the SSADM, RAD, SM
and CMM
Their goal is the same

2
The Spiral Model
Iterative systems development model
developed by Boehm in 1988 which
incorporates risk assessment
Developed in recognition that systems
development projects tend to repeat
stages of analysis, design and code as
part of the prototyping process

3
Each spiral consists of 4 main activities:
i) Planning: Setting project objectives, defining
alternatives
ii) Risk analysis: Analysis of alternatives and the
identification and solution of risks
iii) Engineering: Equivalent to the build phase of
the Systems Development Life Cycle with coding
and testing
iv) Customer Evaluation: Testing of the product
by customers

4
Closely related to the RAD, since it implies
iterative development with a review possibly
at each iteration or spiral which may mean
the production of a prototype.
Before first spiral starts, the requirements
plan is produced so it can be seen that the
spiral model does not detail the initiation and
analysis phase of the SDLC, focusing on
design and build

5
Not been widely applied in industry
Argued that it includes best features of
both classic SDLC and prototyping
approach
Also adds validation of requirements and
design together with risk analysis, which
is often overlooked in RAD projects
