Systems Development
Methodologies
There exist more than just one
Systems Development Methodology
We are going to look at four of the
most interesting and widely used of
these, namely, the SSADM, RAD, SM,
CMM and Waterfall models
Their goal is the same

2
The Waterfall Model
First discussed in a 1970 article by
Winston W. Royce
 Presented as flawed
Easy to follow
Can be implemented on any size of
project
Each stage done separately at right time
hence impossible to skip stages
3
Documentation produced at end of every
stage allowing people to understand what
has been done
Testing is done at every stage
It has five stages as follows
i) Requirements gathering and Analysis, ii)
design, iii) Coding, iv) Testing and v)
Maintenance
4
i) Requirements gathering and
analysis
Includes meeting with customer to
understand requirements
Crucial phase as any misinterpretation here
may give rise to validation problems later
Project definition must be detailed and
accurate with no ambiguities
Important to understand customer
requirements and expectations

5
Basic requirements of system to be
understood by systems analyst or
software engineer
Requirements to be documented and
discussed further with customer
