Types of essays that allow you
to describe your academic value
Examples:
Study Objectives Personal Statement Motivation Essay
An essay is a short piece of writing that explains with details
the main one or two ideas that you plan to learn in your MA
or PhD coursework. Also, it is a proposal of your plan for the
research you intend to conduct for your thesis. You explain
how and why your research will be relevant to your field. You
explain that the work is necessary to do the following:
• Fill a gap in the existing body of research on their subject
• Underscore existing research on their subject
• Add new, original knowledge to the academic community’s
existing understanding of their subject
Your essay is your written
elevator speech. You have only a
short time to explain your value!

• The application form will


tell you the maximum
number of words or the
number of pages that are
allowed.
• Divide your essay into
paragraphs. Each
paragraph describes 1 idea,
but many have 2 or more
examples of the idea. A
paragraph for an essay
usually contains 3-4
sentences.

• The first paragraph is the


introduction, and the final Introduction
paragraph is the
conclusion.
• Grammar Rule #1: use “I” Body
only one time in each
paragraph.
• Grammar Rule #2: use Body
active voice; avoid passive
voice.
• Avoid emotion and unclear Conclusion

when you are writing about
yourself:

• The reader may be a foreigner who does not know


Indonesia, or an Indonesian who lives far from your home.
• Always write the complete names of people, titles, places,
and things. Do not use acronyms.
• Only the President can help the entire country of Indonesia.
You describe what part of Indonesia that you want to help.
• It is better to write in simple English that is clear, rather than
in complicated English that the reader cannot understand.
• Sell yourself through your actions and your ideas!
