INTRODUCTION TO LIME
INTRODUCTION TO LIME

•Lime is produced by Heating limestone.

• sometimes called calcium oxides, CaO.
•Pure calcium oxide is a white solid which melts at 2570°C.
INTRODUCTION TO LIME
•Lime has been used as a material of construction from
ancient times. Egyptians used lime for plastering, while
Romans used this material extensively for making
morter,plaster and concrete.

•In India ,the historical structures such as places, massive

forts, dams and bridges ,etc. Were built with lime as
cementing material.
INTRODUCTION TO LIME
CLASSIFICATION OF LIME
CLASSIFICATION OF LIME
1. Fat Lime
2. Hydraulic Lime
3. Poor Lime

Fat Lime:
•It is also known as rich ,fat, common, high calcium, air or pure
Lime.
•It is prepared by calcining comparatively pure carbonate of lime
which contains about 95% of Calcium oxide.
CLASSIFICATION OF LIME
Hydraulic Lime:
•It is also known as water lime.
The hydraulic Lime divided into the following three types:
(i) Feebly
hydraulic Lime (ii)
Moderately hydraulic Lime
(iii) Eminently hydraulic Lime
Poor Lime:
• This type of lime is of poor quality, therefore morter is
employed for interior type of work.
USES OF LIME
USES OF FAT LIIME
• used in whitewashing
• used in plastering walls.
• used for thin joints of brickwork and stonework.
• May be used in for foundation ,etc.
USES OF POOR LIIME
• This type of lime is of poor quality, therefore mortar is
used for interior type of work.
PROPERTIES OF LIME
PROPERTIES OF HYDRAULLIC LIME

• It form a thin paste with water.

• It is not perfectly white in colour.
• It can set under water.
• containing 30% of clay
• Resembles natural cement.
PROPERTIES OF POOR LIME
• Contains more than 30% clay.
• Muddy white clour.
• It sets/hardens very slowly.
• Has poor binding properties.
