KEPLER'S LAWS

KIRANSHREE V
XI A
NICOlAUS COPERNICUS

 Nicolaus Copernicus (1473–1543) was a mathematician

and astronomer who proposed that the sun was
stationary in the center of the universe and the earth
revolved around it.
TYCHO BRAHE

 He came up with a revolutionary idea and spent his

whole life setting up an observatory and recording the
positions of the planets and stars
 He observed with naked eye as the telescope was not
yet invented
JOHANNES KEPLER

 German mathematician, physicist, and astronomer

 Founder of celestial mechanics
 Worked under Tycho Brahe
 Came up with the 3 laws describing the motions of the
planets in the solar system
LAW OF ORBITS

All planets move
in elliptical orbits with
the Sun situated at one
of the foci of the ellipse
FOCI MEANING : focus, the
center of attention
LAW OF PERIODS

The square of the time period of revolution of a

planet is proportional to the cube of the semi-major
axis of the ellipse traced out by the planet
LAW OF AREAS

The line that joins any

planet to the sun sweeps
equal areas in equal
intervals of time
HENCE, WHAT WE LEARN FROM
KEPLER'S LAW IS THAT...

(1) planets move in elliptical orbits with the Sun as a focus,

(2) a planet covers the same area of space in the same amount of
time no matter where it is in its orbit, and
(3) a planet's orbital period is proportional to the size of its orbit
(its semi-major axis).
