Child
• Casualties 8 years or less
• Cardiac arrest is most common
• Arrest caused by respiratory emerg.
Common breathing emergencies
• Choking
• Suffocation
• Drowning
• Allergic reactions / Asthma
CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation)
• Cardiac Arrest: Unresponsive
• Not breathing or not breathing effectively
• Breathing stops
• Agonal breathing
• CPR:
• Cardio – chest compressions
• Pulmonary – ventilations
• Resuscitiation – keep viable

• ESM
• Call for help
• Send for an AED
• Begin CPR
• 30 comp. 1/3 of the chest no
more than 5-6cm deep
• 100-120 comp. / minute
• 2 ventilations
• Repeat
AED (Automated External Defibrillation)
• Open or turn on the AED
• Follow the voice prompts
• Bare the chest
• Dry the chest as needed
• Apply the pads as indicated
• The AED will analyze
• Press “Shock” if prompted
• Continue CPR if prompted

• Choking occurs when the Airway is blocked
• Signs / Symptoms: Cannot speak
• Cannot breathe
• Holding throat
• Mild: Can cough
• Can Speak
• Can Breathe
• Severe: Cannot cough
• Cannot speak OR breathe

• 5 back blows followed by
• 5 abdominal thrusts
• Repeat, 5 back blows then 5 abdominal thrusts
• If goes unresponsive lower to floor
• Begin compressions
