Angina / Heart Attack
• Angina: pain or pressure in the centre of chest
• Pain radiating to the arms or jaw
• Often described as indigestion
• Heart Attack: pain or pressure in the centre of chest
• Pain radiating to the arms or jaw
• Often described as indigestion
• Pale skin
• Nausea and fatigue
• Shortness of breath

• Stroke: Facial droop
• Slurring of words
• Numbness or weakness
• Inability to speak or swallow
• TIA: Facial droop
• Slurring of words
• Numbness or weakness
• Inability to speak or swallow
• Not permanent, S/S go away

• One side of face will be slack

• Important to get help quickly

• Cardiac Arrest: Unresponsive
• Not breathing or not breathing effectively
• Breathing stops
• Agonal breathing
• CPR:
• Cardio – chest compressions
• Pulmonary – ventilations
• Resuscitiation – keep viable

CPR
• ESM
• Scene survey, Primary Survey
• Call for help
• Send for an AED
• Begin CPR
• 30 compressions 5-6cm deep
• 100-120 compressions / minute
• 2 ventilations
• Repeat
AED (Automated External Defibrillation)
• Open or turn on the AED
• Follow the voice prompts
• Bare the chest
• Dry or shave the chest as needed
• Apply the pads as indicated
• The AED will analyze
• Press “Shock” if prompted
• Continue CPR if prompted

• Choking occurs when the Airway is blocked
• Signs / Symptoms: Cannot speak
• Cannot breathe
• Holding throat
• Mild: Can cough
• Can Speak
• Can Breathe
• Severe: Cannot cough
• Cannot speak OR breathe

• Choking, if mild encourage the casualty to cough
• Choking, if severe
• 5 back blows followed by
• 5 abdominal thrusts
• Repeat, 5 back blows then 5 abdominal thrusts
• If goes unresponsive lower to floor
• Begin compressions
