Optical Phenomenas
What is Atmospheric Optical
Phenomena?
Visual event that take place in
Earth’s atmosphere as a
consequence of light reflection and
refraction by solid particles,
liquids droplets, and other
materials present in the
atmosphere
How Atmospheric Optical Phenomena Form?

• Refraction occurs when rays

bend at a density interface.
• Reflection occurs when rays
bounce back from an object.
Types:
HALO
HALO
What is Halo?
A halo is an optical
phenomenon produced by ice
crystals creating a single ring of
color that can be made from
either sun and moon.
HALO
What is Halos?
The halo is
usually seen as a bright,
white ring although
sometimes it can have
color and can only be
found in the
Troposphere layer.

LIGHT PILLARS
LIGHT PILLARS

What is Light Pillars?

-Beams of light shooting in the night
sky
- Only occur under very specific
atmospheric conditions at night
- Reflection from ice crystals
suspended in the air.
LIGHT PILLARS
How Light Pillars are
formed?
- It is a reflection from
ice crystals suspended in the
air.

- These plate-shaped
ice crystals are so tiny that
they remain suspended in the
air.
LIGHT PILLARS
 How Light Pillars are formed?
- Typically this ice crystals are found in high cirrus clouds and they
form ate temperature between 14 degree and -40 degrees Fahrenheit.

- This plates will orient themselves horizontally and what they do is

they reflect light from the street lights and for, different colors of light pillars
that be seen by our naked eye.
