If the mean of the following number is 17, find the value of k:
12, 18, 21, k, 13
• Solution:
• since; = ∑x
n
then ;
17 = 12 + 18 + 21 + k + 13
5
85 = 12 + 18 +21 + k + 13
85 = 64 + k
K = 21
Relation Between Mean, Median& Mode
• Symmetrical or Normal Distribution
• Positively Skewed Distribution
• Negatively Skewed Distribution
Relation between Mean, Median & Mode
• For a symmetrical (or normal) distribution, like this

In this case,
Mean = median = mode
• For a positively skewed distribution, like this

In this case,
mean > median > mode
• For negative skewed distribution like this

In this case,
Mode > median > mean
Empirical Relation Between Mean, Median & Mode

• Therefore, in moderately skewed distribution the Empirical

relation between the mean, median and mode holds.
• i.e. mean – mode = 3 (mean – median)
or Mode = 3 Median – 2 Mean.
Question:
If mode = 15 and mean = 22.5 in a moderately skewed
distribution then compute approximate value of median.
• Solution:
Since distribution is moderately skewed, therefore:
Mode = 3 Median – 2 Mean
15 = 3 Median – 2 (22.5)
15= 3 Median – 45
15 + 45 = 3 Median
60 = 3 Median
Median = 60/3
Median = 20
If median = 25, mean = 22, in a set of data then calculate
approximate value of mode.
• Data:
• Median = 25, Mean = 22 and Mode = ?
• Formula:
• Mode = 3 Median – 2 Mean
• Solution:
• Mode = 3(25) – 2(22)
• Mode = 75 – 44
• Mode = 31
Homework

• For a certain distribution the Mean was 40.4 and Median 36.
Find the Mode using the empirical formula.
• For a certain distribution the Mean was 57.6 and Mode 54.3.
