Disaster Resilient Architecture

Lecture-1
Lecture for : B.Arch IV year students
Lecture by : Dr. Bindu Agarwal
Introduction
 Subject Name : Disaster Resilient Atchitecture
 Subject code : TAR- 703
 TAR- 703 for theory has 3 credits and theory of MM 100.
Break-up internal-25 marks, MTE- 25 marks, ETE – 50
marks.
 In this class each lecture is divided into two parts as
theory and practice . The theory part explains the
importance of the subject and practice part how it is
practically implemented with the help of case studies. I
tried to cover wide variety of case studies for the more
understanding of the subject.
 The syllabus , lecture plan, program outcomes are also
added in Moodle.

Disaster
Introduction to Disaster

 occurrence of a sudden or major misfortune which disrupts the basic fabric such as properties,
infrastructure, environment, essential services or means of livelihood .
 damage or loss of life.
 normal functioning of disturbs.

Types of disaster:
i) Man made – It includes fires, transportation accidents, structure failures, mining accidents ( gas) ,
explosions and acts of terrorism.
ii) Naturally occurring in our environment :-  flood, earthquake & tsunami
HAZARDS
Disasters are hazards that cause destruction. Something that that create threat to
people , structures or economic assets and which may cause a disaster.

Classification of Hazards :-

i. Based on nature : Earthquake, flood, drought, cyclone, Tsunami, Heat/cold wave, landslides,
Hailstorm

ii. Based on violence : War, armed conflict

iii. Based on deterioration : Environmental degradation

iv. Based on failing of industrialization : Technological failures, oil spillage, factory explosions, fire, gas
leakage, transport collisions
Types of disasters occurring in India or hazards affecting the buildings

Earthquakes- Shaking of earth due to release of stain energy or movement of tectonic plate .

Flood - Heavy local rainfall or overflow river or damage to some water-body

nearby.

Cyclone – Strong winds that rotates counter-clockwise.

Tsunamis- Shallow water waves in great speed from the source across oceans and
towards land.

Landslides – Any rapid down-slope movement of a mass of bedrock influence of gravity

Fire – Uncontrolled burning of forest trees or buildings or shops.

INDIA HAZARD PROFILE
The unique geo-climatic conditions of India make the India subcontinent among the words
most disaster prone areas.

 More than 58.6 % of the landmass is prone to earthquakes of moderate to very high intensity;

 12% of its land is prone to floods and river erosion; long coastline is prone to cyclones and
tsunamis;

 68% of its cultivable area is vulnerable to droughts; and, its hilly areas are at risk from
landslides and avalanches.

Moreover, India is also vulnerable to Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN)
emergencies and other man-made disasters. Recent past natural calamity which we have
witnessed in Uttarakhand, India
