1-FRENCH

• French is the official/national language of the country.


• According to the 2007 Adult Education survey and based on a sample of 15,350 people,
French was the mother tongue of 87.2% of the total population, or roughly 55.81 million
people.

3-OCCITAN LANGUAGE

• Across history, the terms Limousin


(Lemosin), Languedocien (Lengadocian),
Gascon, and later Provençal (Provençal,
Provençau or Prouvençau) have been used
as synonyms for the whole of Occitan;
nowadays, "Provençal" is understood
mainly as the Occitan dialect spoken in
Provence, in southeast France.
4-LANGUES D'OÏL

• The langues d'oïl are a dialect continuum that


includes standard French and its closest
relatives historically spoken in the northern
half of France, southern Belgium, and the
Channel Islands. Linguists divide the
Romance languages of France, and especially
of Medieval France, into two main
geographical subgroups: the langues d'oïl to
the North, and the langues d'oc in the
Southern half of France.
