WHAT IS APPROPRIATION?

 To allocate or assign (something) in a new


different way re appropriate funds previously
allocated for maintenance.
 Allocation, allotment, grant, subsidy, annuity
Appropriation in ART

 - it refers to the practice of artists using


pre-existing objects or images in their art
with little transformation of the original
APPROPRIATION IN ART
 ARTWORKS CAN BE APPROPRIATED IN TWO
WAYS:
1. Artist can appropriate artistic content, which
includes artistic elements, such as motifs,
styles, genres, and similar elements and
complete artworks.
2. Appropriation of art can also be done by
individuals who adopt items that they
consider to be artworks specifically tangible
creations of one culture.

1. Object Appropriation

3. Subject Appropriation
1. Object Appropriation
 Object appropriation occurs when the
possession of a tangible work of art (such as
a sculpture or a painting) is transferred from
members of one culture to members of
another culture.
2. Content Appropriation
 It refers to adoption of works of art that are
intangible.

Example: short stories, poetry, songs, musical


compositions and others

Style Appropriation
 Artist involved in style appropriation do not
replicate the works created by a person or a
group of person from another culture.
However, they use the elements from those
works from another culture in creating their
own works.
Motif Appropriation
 Motif appropriation happens when artists are
inspired by the art from a different culture,
but they do not produce artworks using
exactly the same style.
3. Subject Appropriation
 Subject appropriation occurs when a subject
matter from another culture is appropriated.
