• Ferdinand Magellan offered his service to
King Charles I of Spain and convinced
the King.
• Charles I agreed to send an expedition
under command of Magellan.
• Aug. 10, 1915 Magellan sailed from Seville to the
port of San Lucar de Brameda
• Sept 20, 1519 Sailed westward across the Atlantic
• Sept 26 - expedition reached Canaries Island
• He continue His voyage he reached Rio de Plata
• March - he reach port San Julian
• Magellan continue to his pacific voyages that
lasted 3 months and 20 days
• March 1521 he reached Ladrones Island. he
initially named the islands "Isles of Sails".
• March 16 1521 - First recorded blood compact
between Filipinos and Spaniard.
• March 31 - Celebrated first Christian mass in the
Phil.
They Planted a large wooden cross on the
Top of the hill overlooking sea, Magellan
named the Island "ARCHIPELAGO OF
SAINT LAZARUZ"

MACTAN
• April 7, 1521 - Magellan and his men landed in
Cebu.
• April 14 - another mass celebration 800 Cebuanos
converted to Christianity
• At the nearby Island of Mactan , 2 chieftains :
lapu-lapu and Sula was feuding.
• Magellan took the opportunity to show Spanish
invincibility in the battle
• Magellan found it too late that he
understand the fighting ability and gallant
defense of native wariors.
• The great European navigator met his death
in the shores of the valiant Malay warrior.
• Lapu-Lapu the first Filipino hero.
