E-Commerce
• Electronic commerce is broadly defined as the use of computer networks to
complete business transactions.
• The networks involved include the internet, intranets, extranet and other
private networks
• It is therefore the use of computer applications communicating over networks
to enable buyers and seller to complete transaction.
• The transactions may include buying, selling and exchanging information
• E-commerce has made it easier than ever to buy and sell products or services
online, but it has also created a number of challenges for businesses
• In General, Sharing business information, maintaining business relationships
and conducting business transactions using computers connected to
telecommunication network is called E-Commerce

• Electronic commerce draws on technologies such as:-
Mobile commerce
Electronic funds transfer
Supply chain management
Internet marketing
Online transaction processing
Electronic data interchange (EDI)
Inventory management systems, and automated data collection systems
• Modern electronic commerce typically uses the World Wide Web although it may also
use other technologies such as E-Mail
• E-commerce is the subset of E business
Advantages Of E-Commerce
• Buying/selling a variety of goods and services from one's home or business
• Anywhere, anytime transaction/No limitation of distance
• Can look for lowest cost for specific goods or service
• Businesses can reach out to worldwide clients - can establish business
partnerships
• Sellers needs not to go to store physically. Hence it saves both time and
money
• Easy to start and manage a business
• Supply chain management is simpler, faster, and cheaper using ecommerce
• Generally, reduce cost, 24/7-hour Access, Global Market and More choices
Dis-Advantages of E-commerce

• Security of internet is not very good - viruses, hacker attacks can paralyze
e-commerce
• Privacy of e-transactions is not guaranteed
• Quality of product may not be assured
• Not everyone is connected to the internet
• Delay in receiving goods
• Strong dependence on information and communication technologies (ICT)
Features of E-commerce
• Universal standard:-there is one set of technical media standards technology
standards, namely Internet across the globe
• Global reach:- the technology reaches Commerce is enabled across cultural and
across national boundaries, around the earth
• Richness:- Video, audio, and text marketing messages are possible and integrated
into a single marketing message and consuming experience.
• Interactivity:- Consumers are engaged in a dialog that through interaction with the
user
• Information density:-information becomes plentiful, cheap, and accurate as well as
information processing and storage cost reduced and increase quality
• Personalization/Customization:-The Personalization of marketing messages and
technology allows personalized messages to customization of products and services
are be delivered to individuals as well as groups based on individual characteristics
Types of e-commerce
There are 6 basic types of e-commerce:
1. Business-to-Business (B2B)
2. Business-to-Consumer (B2C)
3. Consumer-to-Consumer (C2C)
4. Consumer-to-Business (C2B).
5. Business-to-Administration (B2A)
6. Consumer-to-Administration (C2A)
Business-to-Business (B2B)
• Business-to-Business (B2B) e-commerce encompasses all electronic
transactions of goods or services conducted between companies
• Simply ecommerce between companies
• Ex Intel selling processors to Asus
Business-to-Consumer (B2C)
• The Business-to-Consumer type of e-commerce is distinguished by the
establishment of electronic business relationships between businesses
and final consumers.
• Ecommerce between a company and consumer online
• Ex Samsung selling phones
Consumer-to-Consumer (C2C)
• Consumer-to-Consumer (C2C) type e-commerce encompasses all
electronic transactions of goods or services conducted between
consumers.
• Generally, these transactions are conducted through a third party,
which provides the online platform where the transactions are actually
carried out.
• Ex My friend sold me a laptop
Consumer-to-Business (C2B)
• In C2B there is a complete reversal of the traditional sense of
exchanging goods.
• Examples :designers present several proposals for a company logo and
where only one of them is selected and effectively purchased.
• Another platform that is very common in this type of commerce are
the markets that sell royalty-free photographs, images, media and
design elements,
Business To Administration
• This part of e-commerce encompasses all transactions conducted online
between companies and public administration
• This is an area that involves a large amount and a variety of services,
particularly in areas such as fiscal, social security, employment, legal
documents and registers, etc.
Consumer to Administration
• The Consumer-to-Administration model encompasses all electronic
transactions conducted between individuals and public administration
• Examples of applications include:
Education – disseminating information, distance learning, etc.
Social Security – through the distribution of information, making
payments, etc.
Taxes – filing tax returns, payments, etc.
Health – appointments, information about illnesses, payment of health
services, etc.
