Third Conditional.
When do we use the third conditional?
We use the Third Conditional to describe a situation that never happened, and
what consequences would have entailed if that situation had happened

Example:

1) If Homer Simpson had worked hard he would have been rich.

-He didn’t worked hard, thus, he never became rich

2) If he had taken the train, he wouldn't have had

a car accident.

-He didn’t take the train, therefore, he died in a

car accident.
Another example

3) If AMLO had played Nintendo, he would have become a Drug dealer

He didn’t play Nintendo, consequently, he never became a Drug dealer (He did
became a criminal when he became the President of Mexico)
Formation:
If + past perfect + would/could/might/should have + past participle
I had seen, I would have moved.

You had thought, You could have intervened.

He had moved, He might have fallen.

She had known, She should have jumped.

Also, it can be inverted,
We had fought, We should have won. for example:

They had felt, They would have driven.n I would have moved, if I
had seen.
Negative form:
If + past perfect negative + would/could/might/should have + past participle

I had not seen, I would have moved.

You had not thought, You could have intervened.

He had not moved, He might have fallen.

She had not known, She might have jumped.

Also, it can be inverted,
We had not fought, We would have won. for example:

They had not felt, They would have driven. I would not have moved,
if I had seen.
Questions about hypothetical or imaginary situations in the past

Yes/‌No Questions in Third Conditional

To build Yes/‌No question in Third Conditional:

Would/could/might + noun/pronoun + have + past participle + if + past perfect.

Also

If + past perfect + would/could/might + noun/pronoun + have + past participle.

Ex. If I had asked Jim, would you have accepted him in the party?
Wh-questions in Third Conditional

Wh-question + would + noun/‌pronoun + have + past participle + if + past perfect

Follow this structure if you want to start Wh-question with if-part:

If + past perfect + wh-question + would + noun/pronoun + have + past participle.
