PARABLE
A. THE RICH FOOL
LUKE 12:13-21
Luke 12:16-21
And he told them this parable: The ground of a certain rich man
yielded an abundant harvest. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do?
I have no place to store my crops.’ “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do.
I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store
my surplus grain.  And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain
laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”
“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night
your life will be demanded from you. Then who
will get what you have prepared for yourself?'
"This is how it will be with whoever stores up
things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
Questions
In the parable, do you think the rich man
felt secure? Why?
How did God evaluate the rich man’s
achievements and values? What was his
future in God’s eyes.
Questions
Imagine yourself to be the rich man. You
have worked so hard and accumulated so
much. You feel so secure. Now comes God’s
judgment. HOW DO YOU FEEL? WHAT
ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?
Question

How does knowing this in

advance affect the direction of
your life from here on?
Questions
What are some of our
securities in life?
Are they really secure?
What are we really living for?

1.Many work just to make a living. Beyond that, they

have not really thought about what they are living
for. In effect, they are simply drifting through life.
2.Some live for themselves. They accumulate
money/position/fame for their own enjoyment.
What are we really living for?

3. Some live for others, like caring for the sick,

providing a means of livelihood for the poor without
helping people find God. Their intention is good, but
their efforts cannot bring real peace and joy to people,
which only a right relationship with God can bring.
What are we really living for?

4. Some live for God and people.

They love God with all their heart,
soul, mind and strength, and love
others as themselves.
Questions
Is it wrong to accumulate wealth and be
rich? When is it wrong and when is it not?
How then should we regard possessions?
Questions
What key principles did Jesus lay
down in verses 15 and 21?
What does “rich toward God” in
verse 21 mean?
Questions
How can a person “live for God”?
What does it mean and what does
it involve?
Reflection
1.Do I spend most of my time and energy
accumulating money/honor/position for
myself?
2.How I can please Him (GOD), or myself
and my problems and needs?
CONCLUSION
Today’s world measures man’s success by the amount of
money he earns or possesses. For this reason,
possessions – and how to accumulate even more – have
become an overpowering priority in place of pleasing
God. May we, as modern Christians, be found and called
“rich toward God” rather than later be condemned by
Christ as “rich fools”.
