At the end of session, the participants will

be able to relate their roles as barangay
safety officers in the overall governance
system.
What is a Barangay?

 the basic political unit of government

 the only level of government that possesses the three
major powers of government
Executive – Punong Barangay
Legislative – Sangguniang Barangay
Judicial – Katarungang Pambarangay

 the primary planning and implementing unit mandated

to plan development projects in its territory
 serves as a forum of the views of the people on various
issues

Barangay Tanods
 a community brigade that is appointed and organized
under the supervision of Punong Barangay
 agents of persons in authority and can apply police
power of the barangay
 implementing arm of BPOC which has the primary
task of ensuring that peace and order prevail in the
barangay
 “play an important role in the development and
progress of the barangay”

Duties and Responsibilites of
Barangay Tanods
 assist barangay offiicials in the prevention of crime
and promotion of public safety
 assist police and lupong tagapamayapa in the
execution of warrants
 assist in institutionalization of and in responding to
Patrol “117”
 assist in implementation of Fire Code of the
Philippines
 assist in facilitating smooth flow of traffic
