What is Climate change?
Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather
patterns. These shifts may be natural, such as through variations in the solar
cycle. But since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of
climate change, primarily due to burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas.
Burning fossil fuels generates greenhouse gas emissions that act like a
blanket wrapped around the Earth, trapping the sun’s heat and raising
temperatures.
How is it affecting people?
Climate change impacts are seen throughout every aspect of the world we

1.
live in. However, climate change impacts are uneven across the country and
the world — even within a single community, climate change impacts can
differ between neighborhoods or individuals.

Drought can harm food production and human health. Flooding can lead to

2. disease spread and damages to ecosystems and infrastructure. Human health

issues can increase mortality, impact food availability, and limit worker
productivity.

How do we reduce greenhouse gases
emissions?
Replacing fossil fuels

investing into clean energy and making it other technologies that don't need gasoline. Public

greenhouse gases. Cities/Towns create paths to make it

What about Deforestation?
Deforestation is the removal or
destruction of forests, typically by We can reduce deforestation by:

greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. • Reducing waste by recycling, reusing, and
composting.
• Increasing public awareness about the
importance of forests.
Eutrophication
Due to the increased availability of one or more limiting growth factors
required for photosynthesis, such as: sunlight, carbon dioxide, and nutrient
fertilizers, eutrophication is characterized by excessive plant and algae
development.

human activities have accelerated the rate and extent of eutrophication

through discharging limiting nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, into
aquatic ecosystems

When temperatures rise, eutrophication can also produce methane, indicating

a large increase in greenhouse gas emissions.
Eutrophication process
How can we limit
eutrophication
There are many ways to control eutrophication. These include:
Lessening the supply of nutrients (by reducing fertilizer inputs, phosphate removal at sewage
treatment plants)
Reduce the amount of nutrients that are already available in the system (for example, removing
plant matter, enriched sediments, or chemically treating water).

Planting buffer strips - they are used to reduce the amounts of nutrients reaching water bodies
from runoff or leaching. They usually take the form of vegetated strips of land alongside water
bodies
Adaptations
How can we adapt to
Climate change?
By developing infrastructure that can withstand the impacts of climate

1. change, such as extreme weather events, sea level rise, and increased
temperatures.

By incorporating green infrastructure into planning and development decisions,

climate resilience can be built, while also providing a range of co-benefits such

2. as improved air and water quality, increased biodiversity, and enhanced

community health and wellbeing.
The occurrence of drought stress at agricultural growth stages is becoming a

3. significant element to start improvement because of climatic variability.

It would be highly desirable to modify genes to increase drought tolerance.

Genes that impart drought tolerance and enhance plant growth and survival
have been identified.
What has UAE done to reduce the effects

The United Arab Emirates has engaged in the

implementation of 14 projects for the purpose of
reducing the emissions of Greenhouse Gases. The
prospective total annual reduction of these projects
estimated about one million tonnes of carbon dioxide
equivalent.

The UAE is also committed to reducing emissions

from flaring, which involves burning off waste
gas or oil during petroleum testing or production.
From 1995 to 2010, ADNOC reduced gas flaring
by up to 78 percent.
