Lesson 19

Phrasal Verbs
Alex’s alarm clock goes off at 5:00 AM. He
turns it off and quickly fixes his bed. He
quickly takes a bath and puts on his school
uniform. He takes his breakfast and sets off
to school. Then, he gets on the school bus.
Finally, he gets off at the school gates to start
his day.
A phrasal verb is a verb followed by a
preposition or an adverb. The combination
creates a meaning different from the original
verb alone.

Examples:

The manager calls off the meeting. (call + off = cancel)

The applicant fills out the form. (fills + out = complete

a form)
Separable Phrasal Verbs
Phrasal verbs made with adverb particles are usually
separable. As the name itself indicates the two parts of a
separable phrasal verb are separable. The particle in a
separable phrasal verb can go before or after noun
objects.
Examples:

She turned off the light. She turned the light off.

I have to clean up this I have to clean  this mess

mess. up.
NOTE that if the object is a pronoun, the particle
goes after it.

Please switch it off. (NOT Please switch off it.)

Here the object ‘it’ is a pronoun. Therefore the particle goes after it.

Give me my money back. OR Give me back my money.

(NOT Give back me my money.)
Here the object is a pronoun. Therefore the particle goes after the object.
Inseparable Phrasal Verbs
The two parts of an inseparable phrasal verb always
remain together. Phrasal verbs made with prepositions
are usually inseparable.

Examples:

He fell off the bridge. (NOT He fell the bridge off.)

The client backed out of the deal at the last minute.
