INTRODUCTION
Effects on nutritional status
• Streptozotocin (STZ) is particularly toxic for pancreatic beta cells
• STZ is frequently used for studying experimental diabetes

• Data on dosing and subsequent characterization of diabetes is limited
• To investigate STZ dose-response characteristics in male Wistar rats by
studying nutritional, metabolic and cognitive aspects of diabetes
development STZ dose 50 and 55 mg/kg causes significant loss of
body weight and fat content.

Intraperitoneally injected STZ in doses of 40-45 mg/kg-bw produces a
mild form of diabetes in male Wistar rats with indwelling catheters, which
can be used for subsequent investigation of diabetes etiology and
STZ causes dose-dependent increases in food/water intake treatment.
