Introduction
- Self-certification (aviation) – a practice of approving design, safety, components
and the likes that complies regulatory standards without a middle-man
- Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) allowed various flights/airplanes like the Boeing
737 MAX to be self-certified by Boeing since 2005.
- Boeing was noted to have self-certified around 96% of their work in up-till 2020
- Self-Certification is still a common practice in the USA’s aviation industry
- Self-Certification based on regulatory standards set by the USA and FAA
Disadvantages
- Leniency
- Manipulation of guidelines
- Cover-up flaws
- Selective cert. guidelines
- Improper understanding
- Lack of knowledge for proper self-certification directives
- No redundancy checking via different parties
Advantages
- Greatly cut overall cost and saves time scheduling due to not needing a middle-
man like the FAA for certification of manufactured products
- Maximizes resources by avoiding duplication of efforts
- Removes a lot of confrontation on site between different parties due to not
having any middle-man
