QUANTUM

NUMBERS
It is described as the atomic orbitals as well as the properties of the
electrons in those orbitals

The set of numbers used to describe the position and energy of the
electron in an atom
PRINCIPAL QUANTUM NUMBER
Indicates the size of the orbitals.

The bigger the n is, the greater the average distance of an electron in
the orbital from the nucleus and thus, the larger the orbital and the
atom.

It also indicates the main energy level occupied by an electron and
takes on positive integers.
ELECTRON
DISTRIBUTION
It is important in understanding chemical reactions.

Two types of notation are used to show the distribution of electrons in

the different orbitals in an atom

Electron configuration uses the symbols of the orbitals and the

number of electrons
AUFBAU PRINCIPLE
It states that electrons are filled into atomic orbitals in the increasing
order of orbital energy level. According to the Aufbau principle, the
available atomic orbitals with the lowest energy levels are occupied
before those with higher energy levels.
