Early
Childhood
Martin soon became friends with a
white boy whose father owned a
business across the street from his
family's home. In September 1935,
upon starting school, King had to
attend a school for black children,
while his close friend went to a
separate school for white children
only. Soon after, the parents of the
white boy stopped King to play with
their white son, telling him "we are
6
white, and you are colored".
Early Childhood
When King talked about this to his parents, they had a detailed discussion with him about the history of
racism in the U.S. Upon learning of the violence that black people had suffered in the U.S. King once
said, “I hate every white person”, but his parents told him that it was his duty to love everybody.
