1.Coercive power
Coercive power is a
formal power source,
where influencing
agents use the threat
of force to gain
compliance from
targets of influence.
2.Expert power
Expert power is the
ability an employee
has, regardless of
seniority, to show
expertise in a subject
or situation.
3. Legitimate power
Legitimate power
is the formal
authority given to
a person within
an organization.
4. Referent power
Referent power is
a type of power
that stems from a
leader's ability to
inspire and
influence others.
5. Reward power
Reward power
is the formal
power given to a
work leader to
give out rewards
to other
employees.
Definition of authority
Authority is the legal and formal
right to give orders and
commands, and take decisions.
It is related to the performing or
run organizational activities
smoothly and effectively.For
example, Police, Army, BUBT
board of Trustee.
• German sociologist Max Weber
used the term authority to refer
to legitimate power.

Authority can be used to protect our rights to
life, liberty, and property. Authority can be used
to provide order and security in people's lives.
For example, air traffic controllers prevent
accidents and provide safety for airplane
passengers. Authority can be used to manage
conflict peacefully and fairly.
Types of authority
There are three types of authority
1.Traditional 2. Rational legal
authority authority
3. Charismatic
authority
1. Traditional authority
Traditional authority refers to
the symbolic or traditionally
supreme power of the state
but actually not exercise any
power. It is symbolic
authority usually like that
king and queen. People obey
a ruler because they know
that doing so in past
generations has given their
society order and continuity.
2. Rational legal authority
Rational legal authority
refers to the institutional
legal rational power which
is exercise by
organizational written
rules and regulations. It is
exercise power for certain
period of time.For
example- Chairman, VC,
CEO, President, MP etc.
3. Charismatic authority
Charismatic authority
refers to the institutional
legal rational power which
is exercise by individual
special experience, quality,
popularity and leadership
quality.For example-Nelson
Mendela ,mother Teresa. …
Difference between power and authority
1.Power is a personal trait,an
acquired ability. Authority is a
formal right .
