Using Colloquialism
and Slang
Casual conversations take place between family
members and friends. Topics are light, like
hobbies, stories, and jokes. When engaged in
these kinds of interaction, we use informal
language, which include Colloquialism and
Slang.

the literal meaning or definition of the words of
which it is made.

Slang
a type of language that consists of words and
phrases that are regarded as very informal, and more
common in speech than writing, and are typically

Examples:
• Bro, I'm totally broke.
(The speaker is telling his/her friend that he/she does not
have any money.)

• We can chill after exam week is over.


(The speaker is saying that he/she can relax with friends
after exam week.)

dropping the “g” at the end of a continuous verb such
as goin', doin', bein',
