MONSOONS

A monsoon is a seasonal change
in the direction of the prevailing,
or strongest, winds of a region.
 Monsoons cause wet and dry seasons throughout
much of the tropics. Monsoons are most often
associated with the Indian Ocean. Monsoons always
blow from cold to warm regions
Two types of monsoons in Philippines

The northeast monsoon.
The southwest monsoon
Southwest
monsoon(amihan)

The Southwest Monsoon
is the rainy season that lasts
from June to September.
The Southwest Monsoon is
the Indian subcontinent's
primary rainy season. The
southwest monsoon holds
over the country during the
summer monsoon season.
Northeast
monsoon(habagat)

The northeast monsoon derives
its name from the direction in
which it travels – from the
northeast to the southwest
 On the other hand, the summer
monsoon, at least the Arabian
Sea branch of it, moves in
exactly the opposite direction –
from the southwest to the
northeast.
Causes of monsoons

the monsoon is driven by the
sun heating up the land and
the Pacific Ocean at different
rates, with land surfaces
warming more quickly than
the ocean.
The warm land creates low-
pressure zones as hot air rises.
Once this pattern establishes
across the region, the winds
shift to fill in the vacuum.
Effect of monsoons

Summer monsoons can
bring heavy rains that
destroy homes, damage
infrastructure, wash away
crops and destroy Water,
Sanitation and Hygiene
(WASH)infrastructure.
During winter monsoons, dry
weather can lead to drought
and crop failures from lack of
moisture.
How does monsoon occur?

A monsoon is caused by a seasonal shift
in the winds. The winds shift because the
temperature of the land and the
temperature of the water are different as
seasons change. For example, at the
beginning of summer, the land warms up
faster than bodies of water. Monsoon winds
always blow from cold to warm.
Characteristics of
monsoons

 Monsoon is the seasonal reversal of wind especially seen in
the tropical regions of Earth.
 Monsoons are the heavy rains during the rainy season,
usually from June to September
 There are large scale sea or ocean breezes during the
monsoons.
 The monsoons usually arrive after the summer season.
 Monsoons always blow from cold to warm regions.
 In India, there are SouthWest Monsoons and NorthEast
Monsoons. The first comes from the Arabian Sea and the
latter comes from the Bay of Bengal.
Positives and negatives of
monsoons

Monsoons can have both negative and
positive effects. Flooding caused by
monsoon rains can destroy property and
crops
However, seasonal monsoon rains can also
provide freshwater for drinking and crop
irrigation.
Monsoons and its Type

Monsoon actually reverses direction
between the seasons of summer and
winter. South - West Monsoon: During the
months of June-December
Winds blow in the South - West direction.
North - East Monsson : During the months of
November and December. Winds blow in the
North - East direction.
