POSTPARTAL CYSTITIS

-Infection of the bladder


occurring in the puerperium.
ETIOLOGY
- Commonly caused by coliform organisms such
Escherichia coli (most common cause), and
Streptococcus faecalis both of which are normal
residents of the lower intestine and anus.

HIGH-RISK FACTOR
1. Stasis of urine in pregnancy forms a reservoir
of organisms
2. Bladder trauma during delivery
3. Catheterization
4. Bladder hypotonia with retention due to
intrapartal anesthesia or trauma
5. Inadequate hygiene in puerperium
ASSESSMENT FINDINGS
1. Frequency of urination with dysuria, urgency
2. hematuria
3. Abnormal urinalysis; pus present in urine,
cloudy
4. Slight fever and chills
5. Malaise, aches
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
