The World Meteorological Organization


 To facilitate worldwide cooperation in establishing networks of stations
for meteorological observations
 To promote the establishment and maintenance of centers charged with
providing meteorological and related services;
 To promote the establishment and maintenance of systems for the rapid
exchange of weather information;
 To promote the standardization of meteorological and related
observations and to ensure the uniform publication of observation and
statistic;
 To further the application of meteorology to aviation, shipping, water
problems, agriculture and other activities;
 To promote activities in operational hydrology and to further
cooperation between Meteorological and Hydrological services;
 To encourage research and training in meteorological and related fields
and to coordinate the international aspects of such training.

WHO-Marine Meteorological Services


 To warn ships of gales, storms and tropical storms, both by
the issue of radio messages and by the display of
appropriate signals at coastal points.
  To issue daily, by radio, weather bulletins suitable for
shipping,.
  To prepare and issue such publications as may be necessary
for the efficient conduct of meteorological work at sea.
  To arrange for selected ships to be equipped with tested
instruments for use in this service and to take
meteorological observation at main standard times for
surface synoptic observations

WHO-Marine Meteorological Services


 When in the vicinity of a tropical storm or of a suspected
tropical storm, ships should be encouraged to take and
transmit their observations at more frequent intervals
whenever practicable bearing in mind navigational pre-
occupations of ship’s officer during storm conditions.
  To arrange for the reception and transmission by coast
radio stations of weather messages from and to ships.
 To encourage all masters to inform ships in the vicinity and
also shore stations whenever they experience a wind speed
of 50 knots or more (force 10 on the Beaufort scale).
  To obtain a uniform procedure in regard to the
international meteorological services.
