SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

• The growth of rapid industrialization and civilization has brought about an increase in the standard
of living as a result of the simplified process, new methods and machineries. Its drawbacks include
environmental pollution as it has led to the discharge of polluted water containing toxic dyes to
water bodies which in turn has resulted in deterioration of the quality of water and has posed a
serious environmental threat. As a result of the adverse effect of the consumption of water polluted
with toxic dyes, there has been a need to find effective water treatment materials, which could
reduce toxic dye contamination from industrial wastewater. In response to that need, this study,
therefore, seeks to develop activated carbon, using cow dung, as an adsorbent which is cost
effective and also using silver nanoparticles as a catalyst support for the removal of toxic dye
(congo red) from waste water.
PROBLEM STATEMENT

• Dyes are the most common of water pollutant. One of the remarkable organic dyes is Congo red
that has wide application in textile, chemical indicators, dyeing, printing, cosmetics, and
pharmaceutical products. Congo red is an important aromatic compound. However due to its
aromatic ring, congo red is extremely toxic, soluble, carcinogenic and its degradation process is
very difficult. Consequently, congo red must be removed from wastewater before discharging. Till
date, adsorption poses as an effective method for the removal of such dyes in wastewater, based on
its initial and equipment cost, ease of operation and the regeneration of adsorbent. The utilization
of activated carbon developed from biomass and biowaste from agricultural, animal, or industrial
waste as adsorbent is highly recommended in dye removal considering its porosity and high
specific surface area.
AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The aim of this study is to develop activated carbon from cow dung supported with silver nano
particles for effective removal of congo red in waste water. This aim will be achieved through the
following objectives
• Prepare activated carbon from cow dung.
• Synthesize silver nano particles and graphene oxide on activated carbon nano composite as
catalyst support.
• Evaluate experimentally the performance of the synthesized nano composite in congo red removal.
• Study the adsorption mechanism on the developed nano composite onto congo red.
• Determination of adsorption isotherm, kinetics and thermodynamics on the adsorption process.
