 I wouldlike to express my special thanks of
gratitude to my teacher Mrs. Piyali Modi who
gave me the excellent opportunity to do this
wonderful experiment to get information
about constituent of an alloy, which also help
me in doing a lots of research and I came to
know about so many new things I am
thankful to them.
AIM:
Investigating the Relationship
Between Light Intensity and the
Distance from a Light Source
Abstract:
 The purpose of this project is to examine the relationship
between light intensity and the distance from a light
source. In optics, understanding how light intensity
changes with distance is crucial for various applications,
such as photography, astronomy, and lighting design. By
conducting a series of experiments and analyzing the
collected data, this study aims to provide insights into
the behavior of light intensity and its dependence on
distance.
INTRODUCTION:
 Optics is the branch of physics that deals with
the behavior and properties of light. Light
intensity refers to the amount of light energy per
unit area, and it is influenced by the distance
between the light source and the object or
surface receiving the light. The inverse square
law states that the intensity of light decreases
with the square of the distance from the source.
This project will investigate whether the inverse
square law applies to different light sources and
verify its relationship with distance.
MATERIALS REQUIRED:

Light sources(incandescent bulb, LED, flashlight,

etc.)
Light intensity sensor(photometer or light sensor)
Measuring tape or ruler
Tripod or stand
Notebook and pen
Safety goggles
PROCEDURE:
 Select and set up the light source on a stable
surface, ensuring it is at the same height
throughout the experiment.
 Measure the distance between the light source
and the light intensity sensor using a measuring
tape or ruler. Start with a distance of 10 cm.
 Place the light intensity sensor at the designated
distance from the light source, ensuring it is
facing directly towards the light source.
 Turn on the light source and record the initial
light intensity reading displayed by the sensor.
 Turnon the light source and record the initial light
intensity reading displayed by the sensor.
 Repeatsteps 2-4 for different distances, increasing in
increments of 10 cm each time, up to a maximum
distance of 60 cm.
 Recordthe corresponding light intensity readings for
each distance in a data table.
 Plota graph with the distance on the x-axis and the
light intensity on the y-axis. Use the collected data to
create the graph.
 Analyze the graph to determine the relationship
between light intensity and distance. Compare the
observed relationship with the predicted behavior
based on the inverse square law.
 Repeat the experiment with different light sources
(incandescent bulb, LED, flashlight, etc.) and
compare the results.
 Record observations, draw conclusions, and
present the findings in a comprehensive manner.

Relation between light intensity and distance between them

Based on the experimental results, it can be
concluded that light intensity generally decreases
with an increase in distance from the light source,
following the inverse square law. However,
variations may occur due to factors such as
different light sources, divergent beams, and
intensity distribution. Understanding the behavior
of light intensity and its relationship with distance
is essential in various fields of science and
technology, and this project contributes valuable
insights into this phenomenon.
