What is special
relativity?
Albert Einstein’s 1905 theory of special
relativity is one of the most important papers
ever published in the field of physics. Special
relativity is an explanation of how speed
affects mass, time and space. The theory
includes a way for the speed of light to define
the relationship between energy and matter —
small amounts of mass (m) can be
interchangeable with enormous amounts of
energy (E), as defined by the classic equation
E = mc^2

Time Dilation
• Time dilation is a particular relativity effect in which the time between two events as perceived by a
stationary observer and a second observer in a moving frame differs. A light clock is a common
illustration used to describe time dilation. Imagine an astronaut aboard a spacecraft carrying a little
clock. The astronaut notices the upward and downward motion of a luminous clock. The light pulse
is visible to a stationary observer on earth at a longer period.

• According to Newtonian mechanics, all observers experience simultaneity in all events. If it did
state that light moves at the same speed, though. In order for the two events to maintain a constant
speed of light, one event must have a "slower time“. Astronauts age more slowly than those on
Earth because of this.

• For instance, if an astronaut left the planet in the year 2020 and claimed to have spent 15 years in
space while actually only traveling for 4.7 years. The astronaut may have been away from the
planet for 15 years, yet he or she has aged 4.7 years.

Length Contraction
• Another effect of special relativity is length contraction. When an object
travels at the speed of light, its length contracts. When an object approaches
the speed of light, its length contracts more when observed from an external
frame of reference

Mass Energy Equivalence
• The formula provides the MASS ENERGY equivalent. Thus,
the equation indicates that energy and matter are equal. It
suggests that a rise in mass equals a rise in energy.

• It may appear that an observer watching you increase your

speed may also notice that you gain in mass, which is
consistent with Einstein's formula.

Cosmic Speed Limit
• According to Newtonian mechanics, a body accelerates as a
result of an imbalanced force. It takes on a different shape as
the second law of relativity. It claims that an object's
acceleration decreases as its velocity approaches the speed of
light. The acceleration of an object ceases when it approaches
the speed of light. Consequently, an item can only move at the
speed of light.
