DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS
ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS – CUPE116

Lecturer: A. Jaison
Office: Block 7 Office 9
Hours: 48
Credits: 10

Aim
The aim of this module is to consolidate A-level Mathematics and introduce Engineering
Mathematics concepts and application of mathematics to Engineering.

Objectives
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
 Find limits of one-variable functions.
 Apply matrix algebra to solve appropriate engineering related problems.
 Solve mathematical problems that involve complex numbers.
 Distinguish between scalar and vector fields and evaluate the curl, divergence and
gradient of vector fields.
 Formulate and solve first and second order differential equations.

Final Examination
Final examination is a 3-hour paper that covers all sections in the course outline. Students
answer ALL questions in Section A with 40 marks and any three from four questions in
Section B with a total of 60 marks. Examination contributes 70% of the Final mark.
Coursework is composed of at least two assignments and two tests. It consists of 9% of the
average of the Assignments and 21% of the average of the Tests. It contributes 30% of the
Final Mark.

Type of Classes
Students will be exposed to classroom activities such as lecturer exposition, feedback
presentation, group work and tutorials.
