SUBJECT: Linear Algebra (MA-201) (Credit Hours: 3-0-3) (Contact Hours: 3/weeks)
Text Book: “Linear Algebra and its Applications”, David C. Lay, Pearson Education, (5th Edition).
Reference Book(s): “Elementary Linear Algebra”, Howard Anton, Chris Rorres, John Wiley and Sons (11th
Edition).
Course Aim: This course is designed to familiarize the students with the basic techniques of solving
systems of linear equations by matrix methods and to teach them the concepts of
abstract vector spaces. It also aims at blending geometry with vector spaces and then
highlighting their applications.
Course Catalogue: Basic Concepts, Matrix Operations, System of Linear Equations, Linear Independence,
Iterative Solutions of Linear Systems, Introduction to Linear Transformations,
Inverse of a Matrix, Matrix Factorization, Application to Computer Graphics,
Introduction to Determinants, Cramer’s Rule, Vector Spaces, Eigen values and its
Applications, Inner Product Spaces, Orthogonality, Diagonalization, The Gram-
Schmidt Process
Course Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
1. Identify solutions of systems of linear equations by Gaussian Elimination and
matrix inversion and carry out matrix operations including inverses and
determinants.
