Introduction
 FAST Activity is to increase
access to healthy diets,
particularly for women and
children, by improving
competitiveness,
inclusiveness, and resilience
of the Ethiopian food and
agriculture system
Introduction…
 FAST use the term cross-market
function (XMF) to describe the
sub-system in which producers
interact with input suppliers and
buyers or the sub-system in which
marketplaces, traders, and
logistics firms redistribute
products to meet demand.
Introduction…
 Food system research has often been based
on the analysis of agrifood value chains
(Kaplinsky and Morris 2001).
 In the context of sustainable development,
however, it must also assess food access (eg,
incomes and food prices), food availability
(eg, local production, distribution, and sale),
and food utilization (eg, social and
nutritional value and food safety), as well as
environmental outcomes (Ericksen 2008;
Ingram 2011). .
Objective of FASMA

 Map the actors and stakeholders in the target nutritious foods and income generating
agricultural commodities, gathering their basic business and contact information for
later project use.
 Analyze the target nutritious foods and income generating agricultural commodities

with the following outcomes:

A) Determine which foods/commodities operate in the same market systems;
B) Assess the overall potential of each market system to aid in target-setting; and
C) Conduct a SWOT analyses of the cross-market functions in each market system.
 Using participatory methods with stakeholders, generate evidence-based

recommendations for strengthening the market systems, identifying cross market

functions to prioritize and potential interventions
