Background of the Study

In today’s generation, people love to make everything colorful. With

the help of technologies, people invented some food colorings as well as
free from synthetic additive colors and inclusively focusing on enhancing
human health from time to time. Butterfly pea (Clitoria Blue Ternatea)
is a type of plant having pinnale leaves and bright blue flowers with
yellow enters. A pH indicator or also known as acid-base indicator is a
compound that changes color in solution over a narrow range of pH
values. To produce a visible of color change only a small amount of
indicator compound is needed. Butterfly pea (Clitoria Blue Ternatea) is a
good indicator mixed with an acidic compound such as beverages, plant,
food products and fruits.
Statement of the Problem

This study seeks to find answers to can Butterfly pea (Clitoria Blue
Ternatea) function as pH indicator?

Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions:

1. What is the characteristics of Clitoria blue ternatea when it is mixed to
tap water, soap, vinegar, lemon, soda, ethyl alcohol, tawas and
bleach?
2. How would the specified substance react when it is extracted to the
Clitoria blue ternatea and will be mixed to boiled water and tap water?
Objectives of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to determine Clitoria Blue Ternatea

as pH indicator.

Specifically, this study aims to:

 Produce Clitoria Blue Ternatea flower extract as good pH indicator.
 Compare the characteristics of Clitoria Blue Ternatea when it is
mixed to tap water, soap, vinegar, lemon, soda, ethyl alcohol, tawas
and bleach.
 Compare the reactions of boiled water and tap water when it was
mixed by the different extraction of Clitoria Blue Ternatea.
Significance of the Study

 The study provides a baseline information on Butterfly pea (Clitoria

Blue Ternatea) extract that supports the traditional uses for the plant
found in the locality. The result of the study may be a help and to
aware people of what are the effects and effectiveness of the
flowers. This can be a start also for a thorough and extensive study as
an alternative use in the community.
Scope and Limitation of the Study

 This study is limited to the pH indication of the plant extract using

Butterfly pea (Clitoria Blue Ternatea). The plants were collected from
Blgy. 3, Poblacion, Quezon, Bukidnon and is also limited to the
flowers only and not the whole plant.
 The focus of the study is on the change in color of a substance when
added with Butterfly pea (Clitoria Blue Ternatea) extract and to
identify what color it produces when mixed with different substance.
Locale of the Study

 The researchers conducted the study from January 30, 2022 at Blgy. 3
Poblacion, Quezon, Bukidnon.
Research Design

 Through qualitative research methods by experimental form. This

study aims to make Clitoria Blue Ternatea as pH indicator.
Collection of the Study

 The Clitoria Blue Ternatea flowers were collected early in the

morning and prepare it for the study.
Materials/ Equipment

The materials and equipment needed such as Clitoria Blue

Ternatea., distilled water, vinegar, lemon, beer, soap (liquidized), tap
water (faucet), ethyl alcohol, coconut wine, tawas (liquidized), bleach
and petri plate were prepared.
Procedures

Clitoria Blue Ternatea flower were extracted in three section. First

part, using kettle to boil the blue ternate flower (20 pcs.) and 20 ml
distilled water. Put into a clean container ad cooled it down. Second
part, soaking Clitoria Blue Ternatea flower (20 pcs.) into 20ml distilled
water, soak it 20 minutes. Third part, using mortar and pestle Clitoria
Blue Ternatea flower (30 pcs.) were triturated.
FLOW CHART

Prepare all the materials

Extract the blue ternatea into 3 section; boiled, mixed and

pure/raw.

Put 2ml of soap (liquidized), vinegar, lemon, tap water

(faucet), beer, ethyl alcohol, tawas and bleach on a petri
dish.

Add 3 droplets of 0.5 ml of blue ternatea extract (boiled,

mixed, pure/raw).

Mix

Observe the change in color.
