REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH, ICPD 1994
Reproductive Health is a state of one’s complete physical, mental,
and social well being and not merely the absence of infirmity, in
all matters relating to the reproductive system and to its
functions and processes. RH therefore implies that people are
able to have a satisfying and safe sex life and that they have
the capability to reproduce and the freedom to decide if and
when and how often to do so. Implicit in this condition is the
right to be informed and to have access to safe, effective,
affordable and acceptable methods of family planning of their
choice. It also includes sexual health, the purpose of which is the
enhancement of life and personal relations, and not merely
counseling and care related to reproductive and sexually
transmitted diseases.
Sexual health
The capacity to enjoy and control sexual and reproductive
behavior in accordance with a social and personal ethics, freedom
from fear, shame and guilt, false belief, etc. which inhibit sexual
responses and impair sociosexual relationships, as well as
freedom from organic disorders, disease and deficiencies that
interfere with sexual and reproductive functions
Constellation of methods, techniques and services
that contribute to RH and well-being by preventing
and solving RH problems

Right to decide, when and how to have children

within the context of social, economic, political
and cultural conditions and orientation
Right to have control over and decide freely and
responsibly on matters related to their sexuality,
free of discrimination, coercion and violence

Capacity of being able to make your own decisions

about abstinence, contraception, abortion and
childbearing according to your own conscience

• Social and cultural environments
RH AND shape the way individuals learn
about and express their sexuality
CULTURE (sex is dirty, sinful and
embarrassing)
• Sexuality is a taboo (do not talk
about puke, kantot and titi)
• It is important to understand the
diversity of views and beliefs about
sexuality, hence everyone must be
able to communicate their views to
negotiate behaviors that are
acceptable
• Gender stereotypes reinforce RH

• Religion teaches people to behave, to act and
RH AND to think
• Different religions have different views about
RELIGION sexuality and they affect the decision making
abilities of the people
• Religion sacralizes norms and values
established in the society, yet they sometimes
lose their appropriateness in changed
conditions
• Prophetic demands for reform may become
so utopian in that they constitute an obstacle
in working out a more practical action
• Religion may be the object of loyalties which
impede the development of new identities
more appropriate to new situations in which
people find themselves
RH AND • In information age, media has a
profound influence on sexual
MEDIA information, values and behavior
• Some films, shows are not appropriate
for young audiences
• It is a one way communication
pathway; there is no way of validating
the information presented
• Reinforces gender roles (male
privileges)
RH AND • Basic unit of society
• Most influential institution in society
FAMILY
• Parents are equally misinformed and
not ready to communicate to children
regarding sexuality
RH AND • Formal education happens in
ACADEME school, what the family failed to
teach, the school teaches (ideally)
• Teachers are not comfortable and
capacitated to teach sexuality
education
• Some schools do not allow
sexuality education (as it
promotes promiscuity)
