Dimension of Human
Sexuality BIOLOGICAL DIMENSION
The biological dimension
of human sexuality involves the
physical appearance,
especially the development of
physical sexual characteristics,
responses to sexual stimulation,
ability to reproduce or to
control fertility, and growth and
development.
Dimension of Human
Sexuality PSYCHOLOGICAL DIMENSION
A major psychological factor that
affects one’s sexual wellness is body
image. A positive body image lends itself
to a feeling of overall wellness, while a
negative self-image can lead to drug
abuse or psychological disorders like
anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder
muscle dysmorphia. One’s attitudes and
feelings toward one self and other
people begin to develop very early in
life.
Dimension of Human
Sexuality
SOCIOCULTURAL DIMENSION
The sociocultural dimension of sexuality is
the sum of the cultural and social influences
that affect thoughts and actions.
1. Religious Influences – These religious
and spiritual beliefs influence feelings
about morality, sexual behaviors,
premarital sexual behavior, adultery,
divorce, contraception, abortion,
and masturbation.
2. Multicultural Influences – Culture
influences one’s sexuality and sexual
expressions. Human sexuality across a
diversity of cultural and social settings
includes beliefs regarding appropriate
partner or partners, appropriate age of
marriage, appropriate sexual
behaviors, family and household
systems, differences in values and
expectations, the development of
sexual expression across the human life
span in multi-cultures, and approaches
to understanding sexual relationships
and sexual violence.
3. Ethical Influences – Ethics and religion often
provide the framework within which people
judge the rightness or wrongness of sexual
activity and expressions. They influence the way
individuals of the society
regard sexuality, and
are therefore powerful
in influencing behavior.

Importance of Sexuality for
Family Health
Sexual health is about having a positive and
respectful approach to sexuality and sexual
relationships. Parents have the moral duty to
make their children know about the mysteries of
human life, because the family, in fact, is the best
environment to provide children with gradual
education in sexual life. To respect a person’s
sexual rights is a manifestation of respect to
human rights.
GRAFFITI
Teenagers today are socially pressured to be
sexually active long before they have been
prepared educationally and psychologically to
cope with the deeply personal and highly charged
nature of sexuality. The mass media are filled with
romantic images of male-female relationships. The
myth it creates is that being carried away by one’s
sexual urges is a sure sign of love, justifying sexual
interaction.
IDENTITY CRISIS
According to Erik Erikson, a
psychologist, identity crisis is the
failure to achieve one’s
identity during adolescence.
Those who emerge from the
adolescent stage of
personality development with
strong sense of identity are
confident and certain to face
adulthood.
IDENTITY CRISIS

Conflicts are experienced not only during

adolescent stage but at various points in one’s
life. Identity formation is more likely to develop
a caring and loving family environment while
encouraging the teen to form responsible and
independent opinions. It is important that
adolescents feel loved and accepted as they
move through their adolescence stage.
SEXUAL IDENTITY
➢is how one thinks of oneself in
terms of to whom one
is romantically or sexually
attracted.
➢We can define sexual identity as
the label that people adopt to
signify to others who they are as
a sexual being, particularly
regarding sexual orientation.
SEXUAL ORIENTATION
➢is an enduring pattern
of romantic
or sexual attraction to
persons of the
opposite sex or gender,
the same sex or gender,
or to both sexes or more
than one gender.

PRE-MARITAL SEX

This is any sexual

activity with an
opposite sex
partner or with a
same sex partner
before he or she
starts a married life.
PRE-MARITAL SEX

Teens today are too curious and often

experiment with sex in unprecedented
numbers. Aside from the emotional fallout of
having sex at an early age, teens also expose
themselves to the risk of sexually transmitted
diseases in addition to an unwanted
pregnancy. Teenagers must be trained to
mingle with the opposite sex in a mature and
responsible way.
TEENAGE PREGNANCY

Health risks associated to

teenage mothers are
dangers of young
reproductive organs not
ready for birth, poor
nutrition during pregnancy,
and maternal death due to
high risk of eclampsia,
among others.
TEENAGE PREGNANCY

Reasons for teenage pregnancy include:

a) unplanned sexual encounters
b) peer pressure
c) lack of information on safe sex
d) breakdown of family life
e) lack of good female role models in the family
f) absence of accessible, adolescent friendly clinics.
ABORTION
The intentional termination of pregnancy after
conception. It allows women to put an end to
their pregnancy. Unintended pregnancy is one of
the main causes of abortion. According to Article
256-259 of the Revised Penal Code, whether you
are the woman getting the abortion, the
abortionist, or someone assisting or encouraging
the abortion, you could get in jail for one month
to twenty years if you commit the act on purpose.
Respect, appreciation, and understanding of
individual differences are necessary in order to
establish healthy relationships.
Sexuality and gender identity can be expressed in
ways that are healthy and life-affirming.
The family plays a crucial role in providing children
with gradual education in sexual life.

on NO TO PREMARITAL SEX.
Below are guide questions to accomplish
the activity.
Developing a self-concept and image is an
important developmental step during adolescence.
This is when adolescents organize and find meaning
in their sexual experiences for them to understand
the underlying motivations for their sexual behavior.
Responsible sexual behavior, sensitivity, and equity in
gender relations, particularly when instilled during
the formative years, enhance and promote
respectful and harmonious partnerships between
men and women.
MAKING RESPONSIBLE DECISIONS

Making responsible decisions and choices

about sexual activity during teenage years can
have implications for overall health outcomes.
How teenagers make decisions about
relationships, abstaining or participating in sex,
and protecting themselves and others from
sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy
are influenced by numerous factors.
DECISION MAKING SKILLS

DETERMINE THE PROBLEM

ACCESS TO EDUCATION AND SERVICES
The youth should have access to adolescent
sexuality and reproductive health information and
youth-centered health services. When adolescents
know their rights, are empowered to choose, and
are heard, they can improve not only their life but
also the lives of their immediate and future
families. Understanding the context of decision-
making and the social influences provide
significant insight for effective health interventions.
ALTERNATIVES ARE NECESSARY
Consider a wide range of alternatives and choices to choose
from before making a decision. Study the possible
consequences of your choice. Try asking the following
question to guide you with your choices from among the
possible alternatives:
▪ Do I rationally and ethically stand for my decisions?
▪ How does my decision affect my family and people close to me?
▪ Is my decision/choice legal?
▪ Is my decision/choice conflict with any of the core ethical values?
▪ Will my decision make me sleep soundly tonight?
GOAL SETTING
An effective goal setting should be SMART. This means that
your goals should be:
SPECIFIC – You can clearly see what it is that you want to
achieve. It is also important that you write them. The more
specific the goal is, the more realistic is the success.
MEASURABLE – You need to measure the progress and some
specific criteria that will tell you when to stop when the goal is
achieved.
ATTAINABLE – Goals that are realistic and attainable will give
you more motivation and sense of achievement.
RELEVANT/REWARDING – It is important that the goal is yours. It
is rewarding when you have clear reasons why you want to
achieve the goal.
TIMELY/TIME BOUND – Setting a time frame will protect you from
procrastination.
EVALUATING PLANS AND ACTIONS
Evaluate the result of your plans and actions. This is
an important step for further development of your
decision-making and management skills on sexually-
related issues. In the face of numerous challenges
that a Filipino adolescent faces in the twenty-first
century – discrimination, gender-based violence,
harmful gender stereotyping – they must be
equipped with coping life skills to help them make
wise decisions for themselves and their community.
The choices and decisions one makes affect
the type of person he/she will become.
Good decision-making skill is essential in
managing gender and sexuality issue.
A good decision is one that is healthy and
responsible.
