Why do we need recreation?
RECREATION
First in the sense of "refreshment or curing of a sick
person", and derived turn from Latin (re: "again", creare: "to
create, bring forth).
Comes from Latin word “recreare” to refresh or to restore.
Restore ones from heavy obligatory work.
LEISURE
Comes from Latin word
“licere” meaning to be
permitted or to be free.
(Carlson, et al., 1963) – it is
unobligated hours available
after caring for employment or
the activities mandatory for
self maintenance.
◦ Recreation is an activity of leisure, leisure being discretionary time.
◦ The "need to do something for recreation" is an essential element of human
biology and psychology. Recreational activities are often done for enjoyment,
amusement, or pleasure and are considered to be "fun".
RECREATION
It is defined in the dictionary as "the process of giving new life
to something, of refreshing something, of restoring something."
This something, of course, is the whole person. ~ Bruno
Recreational activities are any activities which can be
enjoyed by any individual or any members in the family.
The recreational activities can be social activities, intellectual
activities, cultural activities, and physical activities.
TWO TYPES OF
RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
INDOOR RECREATIONAL
ACTIVITIES - refers to any
activity which are done inside an
enclosed structures like the houses
and gymnasiums.
OUTDOOR RECREATIONAL
ACTIVITIES - refers to any
activity which are done outside the
building or structure.
Indoor Recreational Activities: Outdoor Recreational Activities:
◦ Dancing, board games like chess and ◦ Beach volleyball, tennis, picnic,
scrabble. camping, hiking etc.
◦ There are also sports which can be done
both inside and outside like basketball
and volleyball.
CLASSIFICATIONS OF RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
1. Spectator Type - This type refers to spending of people of their time watching the event and derive
enjoyment from it.
2. Participant Type - This type on the other hand, people gain enjoyment by joining the activity and do
not just watch.
The recreational opportunities described above fall into two broad categories: active recreation and
passive recreation.
1. Active Type Active recreation refers to a structured individual or team activity that requires the use
of special facilities, courses, fields, or equipment.
2. Passive Type - In this type, people do not have excessive movement in performing the task or action.
-refers to recreational activities that do not require prepared facilities like sports fields or pavilions.
1. Physical Activity - People exerts efforts and bodily functions in performing the action.
2. Mental Activity - In this activity, the mind works more and less body movement

Recreation provides enjoyment
Satisfaction is immediate and inherent in the activity.
Recreation is as different as people are different; it is
extremely wide and varied
Recreation is activity; it is some sort of action as distinguished
from rest
Recreation must be voluntary; it cannot be ordered, imposed, or
forced
Recreation is flexible; it can be organized or unorganized; it can
be enjoyed in a group or alone
Recreation to one individual may be work to another
Recreation is necessary in order for an individual to have
balanced growth

make life, not to keep a person occupied, but to
keep them refreshed; not to offer an escape from
life, but to provide a discovery of life.
