SIMPLY SUPPORTED VS 2020-CIV-112

CONTINUOUS BEAM 2020-CIV-117

OUR PROJECT PROBLEM.
There is a basement of dimension 30’ x 50’
Three series of beams are to be provided along the width to support the slab above.
There will be supports in the middle to support the beam and split the whole span of
30’ into two smaller spans of 15’ each.
Selecting the most suitable type of beam to be provided along the width of room.
BASEMENT PLAN:
HOW WE ARE GOING TO DO IT:
Options available are:
1) Simply Supported Beam.
2) Continuous Beam.

We will design both beams manually.

Run some software checks.
Checking the economy of both options.
Advise the cheaper one to our client.
FACTORS TO TAKE INTO
ACCOUNT
1) economy
2) external factors like transportation ease and section availability in local market.
LOADS CALCULATIONS:
Dead UDL came out to be 250 lb/ft.
We assume self UDL to be 10% of dead load i.e. 25 lb/ft.
So total dead UDL became 275 lb/ft.

Total live UDL is 1250 lb/ft.

Factored UDL = 2330 lb/ft = 34 kN/m.

SIMPLY SUPPORTED OPTION:
SIMPLY SUPPORTED OPTION:
(Vu)max= 78.28kN
(Mu)max=89.5kN.m

Member selected: W 310 x 28.3

Applied the checks (internal compaction, bending capacity, shear capacity, deflection
and self weight) and all of them satisfied.
SIMPLY SUPPORTED OPTION:
Final selection:

W 310 x 28.3
CONTINUOUS BEAM OPTION:
Indeterminate beam.
Analyzed by Force method.

(Vu)max= 97.84kN
(Mu)max=89.42 kN

Member selected for trial: W 450 x 52

Applied the checks and all of them satisfied.
CONTINUOUS BEAM OPTION:
Final selection:

W 450 x 52
ECONOMY:
1) Simply Supported Beam:
Mass per meter= 28.3kg
As total span = 15’

Mass of one simply supported beam of span 15’(4.573m) = 129.24kg
As we know, total no of simply supported beams = 6*(129.24)
Total mass = 776.52kg
ECONOMY:
2) Continuous Beam Option:
Mass per meter= 52kg
Span of one continuous beam= 30’ (9.146m)
Mass of one continuous beam= 475.6kg

As, 3 such beams
Total Mass= 1426.7kg
ECONOMY:
Simply supported beam is 54% cheaper than continuous beam option.

Also simply supported beam is easier to transport to the site.

So it will add up a plus point in the economy of simply supported beam.
CONCLUSION:
Simply supported beam is a way better and easier option for this scenario as it is
cheaper and span is less so transport easier.
