STEPS TO COMPRESSOR SELECTION & SIZING

 STEP I - Understand the Application

1. Form a clear, concise statement describing the purpose of the compressor.

2. Many compressors operate at more than one condition. Determine why and
how often the various conditions occur.

NOTE:- Details like pressures, temperatures & flow rates are not needed at this
step.
3
 STEP II - Find Out the Details

 A precise understanding of the  In addition the following items

are needed:
following data is required:
• 'Normal' operating conditions
• Gas being handled • Other operating conditions
• Suction and Discharge • Duty Cycle
Pressure • Electrical characteristics and
• Site Elevation (or Local area classification
Barometric Pressure) • Availability of cooling water
• Suction Temperature
• Capacity

4
STEP III - Scope of Supply
• The 'compressor' is everything that is needed to take the gas at some point in
the system and place it at another point in the system at a higher pressure.

The compressor
Relief Devices
Cooling Systems
Vessels
Piping
Capacity Control System
Filtration
Liquid Condensate Handling System

STEP IV - Selecting the Proper Compressor
Knowledge of the gas, required capacity, suction pressure, suction temperature,
and discharge pressure will enable the proper compressor to be sized. The basics
steps involved are:

1. Calculate the compression ratio.

Compression ratio (R) is the ratio of discharge pressure to suction pressure:

2. Choose between a single-stage or two-stage compressor.

6
Single - Stage Two - Stage
Discharge Temperature Higher Lower
BHP Higher Lower
Initial Cost Lower Higher
Overall System Complexity Lower Higher

3. Calculate the discharge temperature.

The compressor's discharge temperature directly affects the life of the piston
rings and valves.

7
4. Determine the volumetric efficiency.
Volumetric efficiency is the ratio of the amount of gas compressed versus the
physical size of the compressor's cylinder volume.
Single-stage compressors
Two-stage compressors

5. Determine the required piston displacement.

Piston displacement (PD) is a measure of the compressor's size and is dependent
on the size, number and type of cylinders, and compressor RPM.

6. Select the compressor model.

8
7. Determine the minimum RPM required of the selected compressor.
With the compressor model and Required Piston Displacement known, the
minimum RPM required can be calculated.

- Required Piston Displacement

- Piston Displacement per 100 RPM
8. Select an actual RPM.
9. Calculate the actual piston displacement.
After Determining the compressor's actual speed, the actual piston displacement
can be calculated.

9
10. Calculate the power required.

Single-Stage Models

Two-Stage Models

11. Select appropriate options.

 Material Compatibility

 Seal Suction Valve Unloaders

 (Piston Rod Packing) Configuration

 External Oil Filter

 Extended Crankshaft

QUESTIONS
1. An engine has a swept volume of (X * 100) cm3 and a clearance volume of 40
cm3, calculate the compression ratio.

(X being the last two digits of your roll number. My roll number PE20M004, so X
for me is 04)

Ans: CR = (SV + CV)/CV

CR = ((4*100) + 40)/40

CR = 11:1

11
2. A 3 stage reciprocating compressor is to compress 4 mol/s of CH4 from 1 bar
to 60 bar absolute pressure. The gas temperature is 330 K at suction. Find out
minimum work rate of compression if Cp/Cv = 1.4 ?
