STEPS TO COMPRESSOR SELECTION & SIZING
2. Many compressors operate at more than one condition. Determine why and
how often the various conditions occur.
NOTE:- Details like pressures, temperatures & flow rates are not needed at this
step.
3
STEP II - Find Out the Details
4
STEP III - Scope of Supply
• The 'compressor' is everything that is needed to take the gas at some point in
the system and place it at another point in the system at a higher pressure.

STEP IV - Selecting the Proper Compressor
Knowledge of the gas, required capacity, suction pressure, suction temperature,
and discharge pressure will enable the proper compressor to be sized. The basics
steps involved are:
6
Single - Stage Two - Stage
Discharge Temperature Higher Lower
BHP Higher Lower
Initial Cost Lower Higher
Overall System Complexity Lower Higher
7
4. Determine the volumetric efficiency.
Volumetric efficiency is the ratio of the amount of gas compressed versus the
physical size of the compressor's cylinder volume.
Single-stage compressors
Two-stage compressors
8
7. Determine the minimum RPM required of the selected compressor.
With the compressor model and Required Piston Displacement known, the
minimum RPM required can be calculated.
9
10. Calculate the power required.
Single-Stage Models
Two-Stage Models
Material Compatibility
Extended Crankshaft

QUESTIONS
1. An engine has a swept volume of (X * 100) cm3 and a clearance volume of 40
cm3, calculate the compression ratio.
(X being the last two digits of your roll number. My roll number PE20M004, so X
for me is 04)
CR = ((4*100) + 40)/40
CR = 11:1

2. A 3 stage reciprocating compressor is to compress 4 mol/s of CH4 from 1 bar
to 60 bar absolute pressure. The gas temperature is 330 K at suction. Find out
minimum work rate of compression if Cp/Cv = 1.4 ?
