Assertion
What is an Assertion?
Assertion is a declarative statement that
claims something is true about something
else. It is a sentence that is either true or
false (Tiongson, 2016).
Types of Assertion
(Tiongson, 2016)

1. Fact
2. Convention
3. Opinion
4. Preference
1. Fact is a statement that can be proven objectively
by direct experience, testimonies of witnesses,
verified observations, or the results of research.

Examples:

contagious infectious disease caused by severe
acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-
CoV-2).

• The capital of France is Paris.

2. Convention is a social agreement in which
something is done, similar to traditions and norms. It
can be verified only by reference to historical
precedents, customs, laws, rules, or common usage.

Example:
• Pamamanhikan is a Filipino culture where the
groom and his family visit the bride's family to
formally ask for their daughter's hand in marriage.
It involves discussions, blessings, and future
planning for the wedding.
3. Opinion is based on a person's observations,
experiences, and knowledge, but they may also
be influenced by personal biases, emotions, or
other factors.

Example:
• Pineapple on pizza is delicious.
• This movie is the best film of the year.
4. Preference is based on personal choice,
desire or wish. It expresses likes and dislike.

Example:
• I prefer romantic movies over action
movies.
• I like to study with music.
