What is a Fire Sprinkler Monitoring System?

Fire Sprinkler Monitoring systems monitor

the water flow, pressure, and valve positions
within a sprinkler system.
Sprinkler monitoring devices monitor condition
variances within the sprinkler system.
Product categories:
• Waterflow Detectors
• Switches (Pressure and Supervisory)
• Explosion Proof
• Notification (AV, Alarm Bells, Control Panels)
• Accessories

Fire Sprinkler Monitoring Overview 4

Fire Sprinkler System Types – Wet Pipe and Dry Pipe

Wet Pipe Dry Pipe

• Most common systems • Contains compressed air (unlike wet pipe
• Always filled with water that contain water) to hold back water
• The compressed air is supplied by an
• Fewest number of components and require less
installation time than other systems electric air compressor (nitrogen bottles
or other source)
• Series of pipes connected to regularly distributed
• Are filled with water only during activation
fire sprinkler heads (fed by a main riser)
• Maintenance is minimal (financial savings are • Best suited in areas that are subject to
freezing temperatures (unheated
realized)
buildings, parking garages)
• Best suited in areas where pipes are not subject
to freezing temperatures or accidental discharge

Fire Sprinkler Monitoring Overview 5

Pipe Sprinkler Systems – WET

With a wet pipe system:

• Heat from fire causes an operating element in the sprinkler head to activate, resulting in water being discharged
• Water discharges only through sprinklers that have been exposed to the high temperatures from a fire
Devices that typically comprise a wet pipe system include:
• Waterflow detectors that monitor the flow of water within the pipe.
• Supervisory switches that monitor the open valve positions, which ensure the system is operable during a fire
condition.
• Alarm pressure switches that are sometimes used to monitor water flow.

Fire Sprinkler Monitoring Overview 6

Pipe Sprinkler Systems – DRY

With a dry pipe system:

• When a sprinkler head opens, air in the pipe releases and a valve opens, allowing water to fill the system
• An activated sprinkler causes the system’s pressure to change, which activates a pressure switch, then
activates an alarm at the panel
• Water discharges only through sprinklers that have been exposed to the high temperatures from a fire
Devices that typically comprise a dry pipe system include:
• Supervisory pressure switches that monitor the pressure level. If the pressure falls too low, the air pressure
regulator turns the air compressor on to add pressure to the system. If the system pressure rises too high, air
will be drained from the system. In each case, the pressure switch sends a trouble signal to the releasing panel.
• Alarm pressure switches that detect the activation of a sprinkler head. When air pressure drops too quickly,
an alarm is activated. This loss of pressure will over-power the abilities of the pump that adds pressure to the
system.
• Supervisory switches that monitor the positions of the valves, ensuring the system is operable during a fire
condition.

New Terminal block designed to

make wiring easy and intuitive.
• Terminals ship wire-ready and accept
wire sizes up to 12 awg. No need to
spend extra time backing out terminal
screws prior to wiring.

the switch and making it more difficult to
short out the switch.

Fire Sprinkler Monitoring Overview 23

Terminal Block and Wiring

Large barrier between two switches

serves two important functions:
• Separation between high and low voltage.
• Barrier houses optional Cover Tamper
Switch. New design snaps into place without
any tools.

New Cover with Integrated Features

Directionality – cover molded to

point in the direction of water flow.
• Installs in only one orientation
• See direction of flow at a glance
• Other directional indicators on saddle and
both sides of the base plate
Offers a better seal and reduces
overall product weight.
UV resistant material does not fade
in sun exposure.

New Cover with Integrated Features

During testing, when dropped from 10

feet, the cover showed a resistance to
damage. Maintaining the original
shape and enclosure rating.
After impact, the current available
metal cover shows:
• Denting
• Paint chipping
• Deformation – affecting a proper seal

New Cover with Integrated Features

• The new, non-painted, cover reduces the

amount of exposed metal. It acts as an
insulator and resists arching, minimizing
shock hazards.
• Just like the current offering, there are
integrated cover tamper screws that prevent
unwanted access and all models are NEMA
4 rated.
• Manufacturer date code on gold label
