BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The phenomenon of smart shaming, where intellectual individuals are insulted
or belittled, is a prevalent issue in both American and Filipino cultures. This
type of response often occurs when someone proposes an original idea,
leading to a missed opportunity for engaging conversations. Smart shaming
discourages people from striving to be smarter and expressing themselves
freely, creating negative stereotypes and a sense of inadequacy. In the
Philippines, smart-shaming has become a part of the culture, hindering critical
thinking and intellectual pursuits. While smart-shaming is prevalent, there is a
lack of comprehensive understanding and research on this issue. Therefore,
further studies are needed to shed light on the phenomenon and its
implications. This research aims to explore the experiences of students who
have been victims of smart shaming, how they cope with it, and the potential
negative effects on their mental health. By raising awareness and providing
insights into addressing smart shaming, this study aims to inform the public
about the struggles of victims and emphasize the importance of valuing
intellect.
