Introduction

There seems to be an increasingly widespread pattern in a country in

which education is of great benefit to people who have high intellect and critical thinking,

hence the word "smart shaming" (intelligent shaming). The words "edi wow!!" or

"pabibo!" are now considered typical responses to people who probably share more

detail than is necessary. Intelligent shaming is a demonstration of how we value

intelligence pursuit. Sometimes, though, we respond quickly and even condemn others

with new ideas. Instead of involving people in meaningful discussions, many social

media users take such an idea sharing as an offence. It's frustrating to learn how healthy

conversations are stopped by these reactions. The 2010 Population and Housing

National Statistical Office indicates that 97.5% of Filipinos aged 10 years or older were

literate or could read and write out of a total number of 69.8 million.

The issues are articulated in such an area that students who are smartly shamed do not

have trust, support and self-determination. Section 2 Bullying Activities, "for purposes of

this Act, bullying" shall apply to any serious or frequent usage, whether a student is

smart-shamed or bullying, by one or more students of writing or verbal and/or electronic

speech, or by an act or gesture."

This study aimed at investigating the consequences of intelligent shaming

University of Arellano – Jose Rizal High School graduates from Humanities and Social

Science. That is why people, including parents and teachers, will do their part to avoid

intelligent shaming in school.

The origins of the culture of smart-shaming could probably have been a key

part of our Filipino identity, as Clare Pillos eloquently said. Dr. Virgilio Enriquez.
1
Sikolohiyang Pilpino, Father of Philippine Psychology, said "pakikipagkapwa" is still at

the heart of Filipino Psychology. Our social ties are essential to us, and we agree with

other Asian countries about empathy, cohesion and social relations. However, our

experience with spanish and American Colonization has embedded in our psyche a

mistrust of Western constructions, particularly elitism, as writer Julia Jassmine Madrazo-

sta. Romana said in her article on the culture of anti-intelligentism on GMA News Online.

The social systems of our country developed an enormous divide during the colonial era

between well-educated Philippines and the common people who are unable to reach an

educational standard. It smashed the spirit of unity amongst the Philippines and

ultimately led many intellectuals to contain an elitist stereotype.
