LESSON 15
Introduction
This lesson tackles about the 3 different types of tradition when
it comes to marriage. The 3 traditions are: Jewish, Roman, and
Germanic. These 3 will be explained in this presentation.

JEWISH
TRADITION
The Jewish tradition has 2 meaning of
marriage: procreation and union. Over
time, procreation became the main
reason for marriage. Simply means that
in this tradition focuses on the welfare
of the offspring. The main purpose of
this tradition is to provide children to
inherit the name and preserve the
husband’s family in order to avoid their
family from dying.
Kiddushin & Nissuin
There are 2 stages of marriage in the Jewisg tradition: solemn
engagement/betrothal (kiddushin) and wedding proper (nissuin).

KIDDUSHIN NISSUIN
The relationship created by Seven blessings that reflect the
kiddushin can only be ended themes of creation, joy, and bride
by death or divorce. and groom.

ROMAN
TRADITION
The Roman tradition has been
through several phases of
evolution. First was the
confarreatio, then coemptio,
matrimonium liberum, and
lastly the matrimonium
clandestinum.
This is the ancient religious
wedding ceremony for the romans.
CONFARREATIO
It involves carrying out a
complicated religious offering
to Jupiter.

This was during the Roman


Republic.

COEMPTIO

This is done by fictitiously


selling or purchasing the bride.
Also known as free marriage thst
became a form of marriage in
their time.
MATRIMONIUM Both parties regard each
LIBERUM other as equals.

This form has 3 requirements: the


capacity of both parties to marry,
their desire to marry, and the
expression of this desire.

Also known as secret marriage


MATRIMONIUM during the Christian era.
CLANDESTINUM
Marrying each other with both consent even
if there are no witnesses.
Additional info on the last phase on the
Roman tradition
● It was ended by the church with the Decree
concerning the Reform of Matrimony:
TAMETSI(November 11, 1563).
● The bond can only be procured with the presence
of a bishop or priest and a minimum of 2 witnesses.
● Secret marriages are now invalid.

GERMANIC
TRADITION
The Germanic people thought something was wrong with the Romans way of
marriage, they insisted on a series of acts:

1. BETROTHAL- exchange of a pledge to marry


2. DESPONSATIO- groom giving the wife a ring and
arrhae; wife giving the groom her dowry.
3. WEDDING PROPER- exchange of marital consent
4. CONSSUMATION- first sexual intercourse of the
couple after the wedding

THE MANICHEES
They are a group of individuals who firmly
believes that marriage is essentially evil. Their
reason behind this is that the main reason for
marriage was procreation wherein they
consider as providing a prison for the soul.
ST. AUGUSTINE

He defended his belief that marriage was


good because of its fruits called bona
matrimonii or the goods of marriage. He
classified this into 2 groups: the primary and
secondary goods.
PRIMARY GOODS (bona primaria)

1. Bonum prolis (proles) The good of the offspring

2. Bonum fidei (fides) The good of fidelity

3. Bonum sacramenti (sacramentum) The good of indissolubility


SECONDARY GOODS (bona secundaria)

1. Amecitia coniugalis Marital friendship

2. Mutuum adiutorium Mutual assistance

3. Remedium concupiscentiae Remedy for concupiscentiae


THREATS TO MARRIAGE
Unity & indissolubility essential properties of marriage

Infidelity threat to unity of Christian marriage

loss of faith in the spouse due to


betrayal

Divorce threat to indissolubility

Rabbi Shammai regarded adultery


and moral misconduct as the only acceptable reason
for divorce.

Rabbi Hillel had all kinds of reasons


for divorce, even trivial ones.
