Japanese Adjective Conjugation
Japanese Adjective Conjugation
CONJUGATION
Adjectives are words that are used to
describe things. They play a vital role in
increasing your language fluency. Japanese
adjectives are broadly divided into two
categories:
1. (i)-adjectives い - けいようし
2. (na)-adjectives な - けいようし
I-adjectives end in -i and are
conjugated similarly to verbs.
Here are some of the most common and familiar
i-adjectives:
1. Cute: ( かわいい – kawaii)
2. Delicious: ( おいしい – oishii)
3. Fun: ( たのしい – tanoshii)
4. Interesting: ( おもしろい – omoshiroi)
5. Hot: ( あつい – atsui)
6. Cold: ( さむい – samui)
7. Big: ( おおきい – ookii)
8. Small: ( ちいさい – chiisai)
Na-adjectives end in -na when they
come before a noun and are
conjugated using the copula –desu
Here are some of the most common and familiar na-
adjectives:
1. Energetic: げんき な (genki na)
2. Simple: かんたん な (kantan na)
3. Fresh: しんせん な (shinsen na)
4. Clean: せいけつ な (seiketsu na)
5. Safe: あんぜん な (anzen na)
6. Quiet: しずか な (shizuka na)
Example:
たかかった です たかかった
(polite) (plain)
Negative Past Tense (add くなかった で
す)
Rule: Drop final い and add くなかった です
Example:
たかくなかった です たかくなかった
(polite) (plain)
(na)-Adjectives ( な - けいようし )
The way you can identify a な -adjective is by looking
at the particle attached to it: な . For example, 元気な
人 ・ げ ん き な 人 , which means a healthy (or happy,
depending on the context) person. A lot of people
find な -adjectives to be easier to learn because of their
simple (and easy modification) rule.
Example: じょうずな – be good at
Present Tense(add です )
Rule: Drop な and add です
Example:
じょうず です じょうず
(polite) (plain)
Negative Present Tense
(add じゃありません / じゃない です )
Rule: Drop な and add )
じゃありません / じゃない です
Example:
じょうず じゃありません (polite)
じょうず じゃない です (plain)
Past Tense (add でした / だった )
Example:
じょうずじゃ ありません でした (polite)
じょうずじゃ なかった です (plain)
