Introduction
 Industrial standard computer equipped with user friendly
application software and cost effective hardware with its
driver software all together performs the functions of a
virtual Instrument.

 In other words VI is a computerized instrumentation system

 Software development system that aims to provide a large

cross-section of users with the tools to design their own
customized instrumentation system
Virtual Instrumentation
 Virtual Instrumentation is an field that merges sensing,
hardware, and software technologies in order to create
flexible and sophisticated instruments for control and
monitoring applications.

 A virtual instrumentation system is computer software that a

user would employ to develop a computerized test and
measurement system, for controlling from a computer.

 This computerized systems is used for controlling the

processes based on data collected by a computerized
instrumentation system.
Components of VI
Software & Hardware Tools
 Lab View is the software used, to create virtual instruments Lab VIEW have
been used for programming purpose.

 Lab VIEW is very powerful software that makes it easy to create, analyze and
manage signal processing routines. It is also an industry-leading software tool
for designing test, measurement, and control systems.

 A DAQ device is used as Hardware, contains ADC and DAC that allows
input and output of analog and digital signals in addition to digital
input/output channels.

 The combination of a DAQ device and Lab VIEW software running on a

computer makes a virtual instrument
Architecture of Virtual Instrument
Sensor Module & Interface
 The sensor module detects physical signal and transforms into electrical
form, conditions the signal, and then into a digital form for further
manipulation.

 The sensor interface, communicates with the sensor module and

computer and stores in a database

 Wired Interfaces are either parallel interfaces, like GPIB, System buses
PCI or serial buses like RS232, USB interfaces

 Bluetooth or GPRS/GSM interface -Wireless

Processing Module &Data base and Information System
 Processing module is  Measured data to be stored for
Microprocessor or offline processing, or records

 Recently used Database
 Processing functions used technologies are Extensible
in VI is classified as Markup Language (XML) and
“Analytical processing” SQL Server and Oracle.
and “Artificial
Intelligence Techniques”.

ECG
 An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a painless test that is used to get
information about the electrical activity of the heart, such as the
rate and regularity of the heart beat.
 The size and position of the heart chambers as well as any
damage to the heart can also be obtained through an ECG test .
 The implementation mainly deals with the heart rate monitor
consists of three bio-potential electrodes that are placed on the
patient.
 Body fluids conduct electrical signals from the surface of the heart
to the electrodes. Measurements are taken as the difference
between two electrodes, while a third electrode is used as a
reference.

Conclusion
 The Virtual Instrument based Electro cardio Signal Detection
and Analysis System has greater Flexibility and extensibility
than the traditional medical instruments.

 It can also take advantage of the Even-evolving signal

processing technology, computer and networking technology to
realize remote Monitoring and diagnosis functions. This will
have a great influence on the biomedical instrument industry.
