Parts of a proposition
• Quantifier – determines the quantity of a proposition
• Subject – part into which something is affirmed or denied in
the proposition
• Copula – part which affirms or denies the predicate in the
subject

Kinds of proposition According to Quantity
• Universal – the proposition applies to all members of the class

Kinds of proposition According to Quality
• Affirmative – the predicate is affirmed in the
subject
usual copulas: is/are
• Negative – the predicate is denied in the subject
usual copulas: is not/are not
negative quantifiers: no/none/not all

Quantity of the predicate

•If the proposition is affirmative, the


predicate is particular.
•If the proposition is negative, the
predicate is universal.
•Rule of syllogism: the middle terms
should be universal at least once

Parts of a syllogism

• Premises: Following Propositions (1st and 2nd


propositions) given in the syllogism
• Conclusion: the end (resulting) proposition
• Middle term: The term that has been
mentioned in the first and second premises.
Important things to remember in forming a
syllogism
•Universal + Universal= Universal
•Universal + Particular = Particular
•Particular + Universal = Particular
How to form a logically sound syllogism?:
• Cancel the middle term
• Determine the quality and quantity of the
conclusion
• The subject of the conclusion will be the
remaining term in the second premise followed
by predicate which consists of the remaining
term in the first premise. Or vice versa
•Every man is

Heavy traffic situations in EDSA can be reduced if the government has to
