WHAT IS PERSONAL COMPUTER?
• DEFINITION: A personal computer is a
computer that can perform all of it’s
inputs,outputs,processing and storage
activities by itself .
• History: The first personal computer was the
apple II which was designed by apple
computer in 1977.
WHAT IS DESKTOP COMPUTER?
• DEFINITION: Those computer that fits on or under
a desk. They utilize peripheral devices for interaction,
such as keyboard and mouse for input and display
devices like a monitor , projector or television.
• Fixed: Unlike a laptop which is portable , desktop
computers are generally made to stay at one
location.
• HISTORY: First desktop computer was the
HEWLETT PACKARD 9100A, introduced in 1968
WHAT IS ALL IN ONE COMPUTER?
• DEFINITION:  computer that combines all
desktop components in one enclosed unit,
instead of having a separate computer tower
from the display monitor.
• HISRTORY: Introduced in 1972, the HP 9830
was the world's earliest all-in-one desktop
computer.
WHAT IS WORK STATION COMPUTER?

• DEFINITION: a high-performance computer


system that is basically designed for a single
user and has advanced graphics capabilities,
large storage capacity, and a powerful central
processing unit.
• HISTORY: Although it was never sold, the
first workstation is considered to be the Xerox
Alto, introduced in 1974. 
WHAT IS SERVER COMPUTER?
• DEFINITION: a computer connected to a
network of other workstations called “clients”
is known as server computer.
• HISTORY: The world's first web server was
invented in 1989 by Tim Berners-Lee
WHAT IS SUPER COMPUTER? USES AND
EXAMPLES
• DEFINITION:  any of a class of extremely powerful computers. The
term is commonly used for the fastest high-performance systems available
at any given time. Such computers have been used primarily for scientific
and engineering work requiring exceedingly high-speed computations.
• Uses: Super computer are mainly used in quantum mechanics, weather
forecasting, climate research, oil and gas exploration.
• EXAMPLE: Summit Supercomputer.
• Sierra Supercomputer.
• Sunway TaightihuL Supercomputer.
• Tianhe-2 Supercomputer.
• Frontera Supercomputer.
WHAT IS EMBEDDED COMPUTER? USES OF
EMBEDDED COMPUTER
• DEFINITION: A microprocessor-based computer
hardware system with software that is designed to
perform a dedicated function, either as an
independent system or as a part of a large system.
• USES OF EMBEDDED COMPUTER: computers are
used for range from Industrial Automation and
Control, Intelligent Transportation, Medical
Imaging, Digital Signage, to unmanned military &
defence.
WHAT IS PORTABLE COMPUTER?
• DEFINITION:  a computer that comes with a
keyboard and display and one which can be easily
relocated or transported I known as Portable
computer is known as PORTABLE COMPUTER.
• HISTORY: The computer considered by most
historians to be the first truly portable computer
was the Osborne 1, in 1981.
TYPES: The following types of portable computer are
as follows.
• WHAT IS LAPTOP?
• DEFINITION: A portable microcomputer having its
main components (such as processor, keyboard, and
display screen) integrated into a single unit capable
of battery-powered operation is known as LAPTOP.
• USES:  laptop is portability. Unlike smartphones and
most tablets, laptop computers run the same
programs as their desktop counterparts, so you can
take your work and entertainment with you
wherever you go without relying on mobile apps.
A)ULTRA BOOK
• DEFINITION: An ultrabook is a category of thin
and light laptop computers designed to bridge
the market gap between tablet and premium
notebook PCs. Ultrabooks provide more
business-friendly features than tablets and
more portability than enterprise-class
notebooks. 
B) NETBOOK
• DEFINITION: a small mobile computing device (a mini
laptop) that has less processing power and storage
space than a laptop computer is known as NETBOOK.
• Netbooks are meant to be carried around for work on
the move. For that matter, they are built with light
parts so that the total weight is not more than three
pounds heavy. They will weigh as little as a pound or
even less. This will allow you to carry it in your hand
and use it with the other without an issue.
2)TABLET
• DEFINITION:  a wireless, portable personal
computer with a touchscreen interface is
known as TABLET
• Tablet or Tablet Computer is a device generally
operated with a mobile operating system. It
has the touchscreen display and there is a
rechargeable battery inbuilt in it. It is basically
a thin and flat device..
I. SLATE TABLET.
• DEFINITION: a portable computer that
accepts hand-printed lettering and is
operated with a stylus or your fingers is
known as SLATE TABLET.
• Unlike a traditional computer, a tablet does
not have a keyboard or mouse and is lighter
and smaller than a portable computer.
B) WHAT IS MOBILE DEVICES?
• DEFINITION: Any mobile computer or a
variety of other electronic devices that have
portable functionality is known MOBILE
DEVICES.
• EXAMPLE: Typical examples include
smartphones, tablets, laptop computers,
smart watches, e-readers, and handheld
gaming consoles.
• SMART PHONE
• DEFINITION: a cell phone that allows you to do
more than make phone calls and send text
messages is known as SMART PHONE.
• USES: Smartphones can browse the Internet
and run software programs like a computer.
Smartphones use a touch screen to allow users
to interact with them.
• EXAMPLE: iPhone, Android, Blackberry,
Windows phone, Samsung Galaxy etc.
2) HANDHELD COMPUTER
• DEFINITION: A highly mobile and
compact computer, also called a PDA (personal
digital assistant), originally built to function as
a personal scheduling assistant is known as
HANDHELD COMPUTER.
• EXAMPLES:  NEC MobilePro 900c, HP 320LX,
Sharp Telios, HP Jornada 720, IBM WorkPad
Z50 etc are the examples of handheld
computer.
3)PORTABLE MEDIA PLAYER
• DEFINITION: a consumer electronics device that is
capable of storing and playing digital media such as
audio, images, video, documents is known as
POTRABLE MEDIA PLAYER.
• WORKING METHOD: Simply plug your portable
storage in one end – SD card, external Hard Drive,
Memory Stick, whatever takes your fancy, and let the
Media Player convert it into a format that a TV can
read. Meaning you can watch your home movies, view
pictures and listen to music directly through the TV.
4)EBOOK READER
• DEFINITION:  A dedicated device that lets you
read electronic books is known as EBOOK
READER.
• FUNCTION: They're designed primarily for
downloading electronic books, magazines and
newspapers from a wireless store. When
reading, simply tap or swipe the page to flip
through the electronic pages.
C) MINI COMPUTER
• DEFINITION:  a type of computer that possesses most of the features
and capabilities of a large computer but is smaller in physical size is
known as MINI COMPUTER.
• WORKING METHOD:  Alike to a computer, a mini PC has a central
processing unit (CPU) and memory, which means a mini PC basically
operates the same way as a computer does. Where the CPU would
execute instruction by fetching it from the memory, using ALU to
perform an operation, and then storing the result to memory.
• USES: Mini computer uses for scientific and engineering computations,
business transaction processing, file handling, and database
management.
• Example: Examples include the Intersil 6100 single-chip PDP-8, DEC T-11
PDP-11, microNOVA and Fairchild 9440 Nova, and TMS9900 TI-990.
D)MAINFRAME COMPUTER
• DEFINITION:  high-performance computers with large
amounts of memory and processors that process
billions of simple calculations and transactions in real
time is known as MAINFRAME COMPUTER.
• EXAMPLES: Examples of mainframe computers include
the IBM zSeries, System z9 and System z10 servers. 
• USES: They are primarily used by large organizations for
mission-critical applications requiring high volumes of
data processing.
