System Overview 2

Protects driver and passenger from potential risk of injury in the event of a high-speed vehicle colli-
sion or overturn accident.

Effect (Mortality reduction with seat belt and airbag (NHTSA report, 1999))
- With only seat belt: 45% reduction
- With only front airbag: 14% reduction

- With a combination of seat belt and front airbag: 50% reduction

④ Cushion

③ Gas flow direction

② Inflator
① Electric signal generated
from ACU

Operation Order
① Electric signal from ACU is inputted to inflator.
② Detonator of inflator is ignited by electricity to explode powder inside inflator.
③ Hot pressurized gas is produced and moves in between airbag cushions.
④ Cushion unfolds and breaks through cover till it deploys.
Operation procedure – Airbag module 7

⑤ Deployed shape is adjusted by tether.

⑤ Airbag cushion deployment

⑥ Once deployed, airbag cushion absorbs I

mpact energy with gas emitted through vent holes

⑤ Airbag deploys and tether inside cushion keeps cushion in correct size and form.
⑥ Once the body of driver or passenger makes contact with airbag after it is deployed,
gas in airbag is emitted through vent holes to absorb impact energy.

Caution 10

Do NOT disassemble the airbag module.

Cushion in the airbag is optimally designed for collision performance, and cover and mounting is de-

signed so that it cannot be removed. As a result, the airbag module must NOT be disassembled.

Strength on assembly part is weakened in case of disassembling and re-assembling, and result in in-

jury from flying cover when the airbag is deployed. In addition, if foreign object is entered between

the inflator (gas generator) and cushion mount, such an object may fly at high speed and cause injury

when the airbag is deployed.

Wiring connected to the airbag must also NOT be tempered or modified.

Break Lamp

Hazard Lamp

Major features
1) If vehicle comes to a stop after ESS is activated, the system automatically turns ON
the hazard lamp for up to 10 seconds (same concept with HMC sedans).
2) If driver already pressed the hazard lamp switch or if hazard lamp switch is pressed while
ESS is active, then ESS signal transmission is stopped.
3) ESS status is deactivated if vehicle deceleration speed is below 3 ㎨ or if ABS is deactivated.
4) ESS logic is based on operation condition set by regulations (however, there are some
countries that prohibits ESS by law, so it is applied as option.)
